File-sharing showdown at Supreme Court

File sharing services and the entertainment industry will do battle this afternoon in the U.S. Supreme Court. Whatever decision comes from this will set a major precedent. Supporters of P2P file sharing look to the 1984 decision that shielded Sony from its users coping television shows on their VCRs without permission. The lower courts say this ruling applies to Grokster as well. The entertainment industry argues that Grokster's makes it's money through the illegal trade of copyrighted materials over these networks.
