NOEL TELLS THE WHOLE '"TRUTH"
Category: Music News
Posted by Patrick Vu | March 31, 2005 | 12:52 PM
Oasis, those British Wankers that were once the biggest act crossing the Atlantic from the U.K., are back and promising their best work since their debut, Definitely Maybe. The Gallagher brothers are sure to bring their family squabbles to the forefront with the usual confident swagger that made us hate them but love their music (I still haven't gotten over a cancelled show where I had 5th row tickets!). The May 30th release of Don't Believe the Truth is just in time to compete and steal some of the spotlight away from the U.K.'s current big name, Coldplay.

Being Julia

 |
Grade: C- | Genre: Drama
Summary: As the curtains close, this movie is pretty much only for the dedicated Annette Bening fan. I really wish this movie had surrounded her with more substance to bounce her talents off of. |
 |
Starring: Annette Bening, Jeremy Irons, Bruce Greenwood, Shaun Evans & Miriam Margolyes
Director: Istvan Szabo
What must it be like roaming around in Annette Bening's skin (and I'm not saying that in a Silence of the Lambs kind of way for that one sicko whose mind went that direction)? You are one of the most acclaimed actresses of your generation, yet young and feisty Hillary Swank shuts you out of two Oscars in a row. With age and maturity, Bening brings a greater range to her work though our glance still settles on the women vying to dethrone her from the mantle of Hollywood's great. Isn't it bad enough that there just aren't roles for older actresses anymore, outside of playing insignificant parts as someone's mother or (gasp!) grandmother, but we exacerbate the problem by glossing over their achievements as we scour the celluloid for that potential someone who is to be the next Annette Bening. Who knows perhaps these younger actresses are shooting past their idols? Being Julia seems to be a commentary on the state of the aging actress and the challenges she faces as her beauty dims and the lines of age settle.
The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute

Grade: C | Genre:

Summary: Frances is mute for a reason. There is no describing this album. Bandmates, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, have created a convoluted work of twists and turns that will knock you on your ass. Proceed with caution. |
 |
After several rounds of The Mars Volta's Frances the Mute, I found myself totally worn and in a daze. Never before has an album over-worked my senses without myself having to put forth the slightest effort. Francis spits aggressive melancholy in your face, drags you through the mud, and never lets up. The funny thing is that for all the trials that you are put through, you do hear sparse occurrences of brilliance in the numbing compositions. One might even go as far as to say that it has the potential of becoming an album that will influence many future bands to come.

Lollapalooza Music Fest Is Chicago Bound
Category: Music News
Posted by Patrick Vu | March 30, 2005 | 12:05 PM
The once big name festival that showcased the best in Alternative music will be taking another stab at bringing anti-pop bands to the masses. 10+ years ago, it was the concert event of the year, but now Lollapalooza can't seem to reignite the same spark that attracted so many new fans. From 5-year breaks to poor ticket sales to cancelled tours, the festival hasn't been able to get it done. Now it attempts to stage another comeback, and Chicago will be the next launching pad.

What is Zach Braff up to?

Past his usual day gig as J.D on "Scrubs" and continuing to revel in the success of his directorial/writing debut Garden State, Zach got Punk'd. Donald Faison covered his brand new car in graffiti. Oh man, how I would have liked to have seen his face when he saw that. He is also taking the reigns on Gavin Degraw's new video "Chariot". He has a new movie ready to shoot this spring called Last Kiss which I hear Rachel McAdams (the Notebook) is set to co-star. The episode of Arrested Development that Braff guest stars in airs April 10th. He also weighs in on the Flech rumors circulating on the Internet. Whew, boy is certainly busy.

Grade: B+ | Genre: Drama
Summary: "Grey's Anatomy" has tremendous potential to become one of the hot new shows this season. It has that smart, hungry feel of a fresh, potent series that "ER" misplaced long ago. |
 |
Starring: Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, James Pickens Jr., T.R. Knight, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl & Isaiah Washington
Network: ABC
Programming: Sunday 10-11 ET
Fresh off bemoaning the state of television today, I think we may have something worth sinking into the couch on Sunday night. "Grey's Anatomy" is a smart, new drama following a group of surgical interns as they swim out of their small med school pond into the shark-infested waters that await them at Seattle Grace Hospital. The show's focus rests on Meredith Grey played by Ellen Pompeo (Old School, Moonlight Mile). She is a perky, blonde intern who comes from impeccable medical pedigree.

The biggest and baddest names in women's tennis, Venus and Serena Williams, are developing their own reality series to air on the ABC Network. "The series will provide our fans with an up-close, inside look at our lives away from the tennis courts," Venus Williams said.
Not too sure what to make of this one. I don't know if fans would want to see these girls out of their elements away from tennis. Why not let us watch the sister's kick ass on the courts toward another tournament victory?

Big Mac beats
Category: Offbeat
Posted by Patrick Vu | March 29, 2005 | 01:18 PM
McDonald's is hoping to tempt rappers away from their usual fare of guns and women to include the words Big Mac in their lyrics.
The fast food giant is offering up to £2.80 every time the song is played on the radio, according to US magazine Advertising Age.
And the company reckons it can seduce the more hardcore stars of hip hop into setting Big Mac to a beat.
"This partnership reflects our appreciation and respect for the most dominant youth culture in the world," a McDonald's spokesman said.
He stressed that the company would have final approval over any lyrics and was only targeting artists whose style identifies with their brand.
US lobby group Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood was less impressed, however.
"They're dumping one of their most high fat, high calorific products on kids in a way that the kids won't even know its happening," said founder Susan Linn.

Girls Just Wanna Watch Porn

It's not only male rock stars who watch porn on tour buses and make out with fans. The Donnas are four women who date their groupies and sing about their sexual conquests with as much unapologetic abandon as the guys do. We asked the band, who've just released their appropriately raucous new album, Gold Medal, to share their rules for survival as an all-girl rock gang.

File-sharing showdown at Supreme Court

File sharing services and the entertainment industry will do battle this afternoon in the U.S. Supreme Court. Whatever decision comes from this will set a major precedent. Supporters of P2P file sharing look to the 1984 decision that shielded Sony from its users coping television shows on their VCRs without permission. The lower courts say this ruling applies to Grokster as well. The entertainment industry argues that Grokster's makes it's money through the illegal trade of copyrighted materials over these networks.

Morrissey - Live at Earl's Court

Alternative Rock
Summary: This disk is a tasty appetizer to tide you over until you can dive into the actual experience that is a Morrissey live show. |
 |
By now, anyone who has their finger on the pulse of music knows that Morrissey deftly resurrected himself last year with the release of the brilliant You are the Quarry. After seven years devoid of Moz that was preceded by two tasteless albums, the king of Manchester stormed back onto the scene taking a giant eraser to the past 10 years. Perhaps the only thing more exciting than breathing in this salient work was discovering that he would be embarking on his first extensive U.S. tour since the mid 90's, headlining Lollapalooza. The leaking elation was short lived as we discovered weeks later that Lollapalooza had folded on the back of weak ticket sales. It would be a month before Morrissey would roll out a tour schedule to squelch our disappointment. That Atlanta evening in October, when he made the Tabernacle his home, would rank as one of the best shows I have ever experienced, and I have hundreds to draw from.

The Incredible PSP

Unless you've been living in a cave for the past week, you know that the most incredible thing to hit handheld gaming has landed. Sony's PSP is the sweetest little convergence device on the market. It plays MP3s, movies and of course games. A co-worker of mine let me check this out and take a spin on "Ridge Racer". The graphics are unbelievable, the sound is crisp and the responsiveness is dead on. Sony has basically wrapped up their Playstation into a handheld without sacrificing anything. Gamers, this is a must have.

Grade: A | Genre:

Summary: "Finding Neverland" is a charmingly subtle film that plays to our imagination. It isn't overdone and is a sincere story of maturity and grief. Neverland is surprisingly solemn with an abundance of heart-felt emotion that will have you brushing away the tears. |
 |
Starring: Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, Julie Christie, Radha Mitchell, Dustin Hoffman, Freddie Highmore
Director: Marc Forster
The Peter Pan Syndrome is in us all. In our grown-up lives, we no doubt fantasize about those days when things were much simpler. Our youthful excitement has been replaced by responsibility and our need to provide for ourselves and our families.
"Finding Neverland" seeks a balance between our adulthood and our imaginations. It's a portal into our inner child and allows us to momentarily get way from our everyday pressures.

Grade: C+ | Genre: Drama / Musical
Summary: If you are up for the challenge, De-Lovely bears fruit. Just be prepared for a long growing season. |
 |
Starring: Kevin Klein & Ashley Judd
Director: Irwin Winkler
De-Lovely is really the tale of two films. The first half plays like a lackluster musical, slow and prodding, testing our fragile patience at every turn. The second act is more contemplative and deeply felt. At the heart of this film is the intricate life of Cole Porter. For those stuck in a quizzical look, Cole Porter was one of the greatest American composers who gave us such famous numbers as "Night and Day" and "Anything Goes".

Summary: The bad news is "The Office's" dry wit might have a hard time finding an audience in mainstream America. It's more for fans of shows like "Scrubs" where the humor isn't so obvious. The good news is that, the show will be moved right after "Scrubs" on Tuesday nights where there already is a built-in audience. |

Starring: Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, B.J. Novak, Rainn Wilson Network: NBC
Though we've briefly discussed how American Television continues to endure a creative funk in favor of the ever-increasing output of Reality shows, we've also stated that borrowing from the Brits has been an easy way to buy more time until the next big breakthrough.
The latest reaffirming evidence proving us right is the Americanization of the British hit, "The Office." It would have been very easy to dismiss this new NBC series as a copycat sure to suffer the same fate as the most recent Brit to American failure, "Coupling." However, "The Office" is special. For anyone who's ever worked in an office environment, this docu-reality-parody show is for you.

Man, right now there is something smart and shiny and good in the water in Montreal. The Stars share a hometown with the Arcade Fire, the Dears, Broken Social Scene and the recently defunct Unicorns, among others. The whole scene is tweaking old recipes and creating something new and tasty. Maybe it's that Canada actually gives grants to talented musicians to explore whatever they want. On their third album, the Stars explore imperfect love and how it sounds on a bed of crisp green electropop.

Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams

Grade: A- | Genre:
Rock
Summary: This is the CD you want playing at a late Sunday afternoon cookout when you're kicking back and sipping drinks. All you need is Jack and his guitar, and I swear you can almost feel a cool light breeze blow through. Gather 'round kids, because you're in for a treat. |
 |
You may not realize this, but there is a void in your CD changer that Jack Johnson might be able to fill. Sure, you may think that your eclectic collection of Coldplay, The Shins, John Legend and 50 Cent perfectly satisfy as your musical taste buds. However, what you don't have is the easygoing surfer sounds that Jack has mastered on his third release, In Between Dreams.
We can call him Jack, not Mr. Johnson, because we feel like he's our friend. He's the guy that breaks out the guitar at a party...he's your neighbor that fiddles around on his back porch. His laid back style is infectious, and you know it's time to take things easy when In Between Dreams is playing.

 |
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, Gena Rowlands, Sam Shepard & Joan Allen
Director: Nick Cassavetes
I have to admit that this film caught me off guard. Honestly, I'd been putting off seeing this film like it was the plague and through my mother's prodding I shuffled my Netflix queue around so I could finally say, "yes I've seen it". The twisted guy that I am, I was almost looking forward to having a nice juicy film to open up both barrels on, blasting the cliches of romance films and the evils of watered down Hollywood box office fodder. Yet here the credits roll and I've got nothing. This was a really enjoyable film that I'm not ashamed to say that I liked. I hear someone pounding at the door to revoke my guy card as we speak.

Grade: B | Genre: Modern Rock
Summary: This was a very good show, but fell short of being a great one. They need to take advantage of the increased production values that an arena show offers to a band. Beyond this, their sound was great, and they are slowly finding their way into their newly crowned status of mega band. |

Ah, Maroon 5 -- the band that should be paying massive royalties to Stevie Wonder for modernizing his patented sound. Our little group is all growed up now, as Vince Vaughn would say. I remember the days when they were struggling up and comers aiming for John Mayer like success, elbowing for space with fellow contemporaries like Will Hoge and Matt Nathanson. Maroon 5 just happened to be one of those who caught fire and for good reason. While they owe a huge debt to their influences, they have cleared their own space in the crowded musical landscape.

Interesting "Dogma" Factoids

Is it a coincidence the Dogma spelled backwards is AMGOD, where AM stands for Alanis Morrisette, who played God in the over ambitious 1999 mis-step by Kevin Smith? The film was written by Smith before he did the ultra low-budget b/w classic Clerks but wasn't produced then for 2 reasons: 1) he knew Jason Mewes (Jay) wasn't ready because he could hardly remember his lines and 2) he knew that he would get a lot of flack from the film, which could've hurt his chances for future movie projects.

Grade: B | Genre: Drama
Summary: If you can see your way past some troublesome plot holes, The Upside of Anger will reward you with an intriguing portrait of a dysfunctional family struggling to maintain its sanity among the chaos and the love. |
 |
Starring: Joan Allen, Kevin Costner, Erika Chistensen, Keri Russell, Alicia Witt, Evan Rachel Wood & Mike Binder
Director: Mike Binder
Joan Allen is one of the great actresses in Hollywood who has been largely neglected. She has quietly built an impressive resume of films (the Ice Storm, the Contender, Nixon) that have allowed her talents to stretch out in a variety of roles. The Upside of Anger is no different where Allen shines as Terry Wolfmeyer, an alcoholic, stifling mother of four whose life has been flipped upside down through her husband's abrupt leaving. The story doesn't waste a moment as she lays this shocking entree out over dinner with her three daughters in the film's opening frame. Terry's anger and venom are just boiling over as she's poised a step away from taking a hatchet to his head, wherever he may be, or crumbling under the weight of her freshly emptied life.

Grade: B+ | Genre:
Romance
Summary: Surprisingly, Alfie's annoying asides and the predictable storyline only mildly detract from this immensely enjoyable film. For this one brief moment, every ordinary guy can be transformed into the man every woman wants and every woman can feel the spark of sexual exhilaration charged from being with that guy who is completely wrong for her in all the right ways. |
 |
Starring: Jude Law, Marisa Tomei, Omar Epps, Nia Long, Sienna Miller & Susan Sarandon
Director: Charles Shyer
What is it about the womanizers that everyone loves? Every man wants a taste of that life (yes ladies especially your ultra-committed, domesticated man) and every woman finds them irresistibly intoxicating. It's grounded in the excitement of it all, to be free of life's strings that bind us down. To take on many loves without question or regret in order to live life to it's fullest in each moment. There is something incredibly innocent and naive about it, living life purely based on the whim of human desire. Hardly any of us would actually try it because, well, we have a conscious realizing how ruthless selfishness affect those who place their trust in us. And, to be honest, few of us are blessed with the good looks, cunning and charm to pull it off. I guess that is why we love to live vicariously through these characters.

NBC will soon premiere, "The Book of Daniel," a pilot drama that the network hopes will boost slumping ratings since "Friends" and "Frasier" ended their series run. Will Jesus continue to sell? NBC sure hopes so.

Summary: "Burning in the Sun" won't rock your world, but it will help you find your solitude to deal with the ups and downs of relationships. It's that CD you play over and over again to help you get through the rough times. |

It's inevitable for a new artist to have their sound compared to similar artists who have already made their mark on the music industry. It helps to know what we can expect from an album and to build our conclusions from there. So what happens when a band, instead of being compared, is actually mistaken for another? Admit it, we did it when we thought Stone Temple Pilot's "Plush" was Pearl Jam's newest hit single, or when we thought John Mayer was a mild version of Dave Matthews. These bands not only have to deal with breaking through towards recognition, but they also have to deal with coming out from under someone else's shadow.

Mann has set a May 3rd release date on her fifth album, The Forgotten Arm, which will focus on a boxer and his girlfriend. She recorded the album in a mere 5 days this past summer, composing most of the songs herself on the piano. A very promising note is musical virtuoso Joe Henry is manning the production chair.

Lord of the Rings musical to rule Toronto stage

Seriously? It's obvious that J.R.R. Tolkien's epic translated well on the big screen, but can it be taken seriously as a musical? A stage production is fine, but do we really need to see Frodo and Gollum break out in a song and dance number? I'm still waiting for the punchline.

XXX - Music from Thinking XXX

Grade: D+ | Genre:
Club
Summary: XXX is an assembly of mediocre tunes that want to arouse but instead simply tease. |
 |
I'm sure everyone here has had a dream at one point in their life. Some want to be fire fighters. Some want to be doctors. Some want to be exotic dancers. There will be no judging of other people's dreams here or I will swiftly kick you out of this review. So, what do we need to pursue this dream of becoming an exotic dancer? Well you could have a poll installed in your workout room. You could enroll in the cardio strip tease class at your local, trendy gym. You can head over to Frederick's for a bountiful selection of trashy g-strings. There is something missing in our preparation. Ah of course, how could we forget the music? We could certainly go with a smart, high browed, 70's flavored mix like Dimitri from Paris' A Night at the Playboy Mansion, but how many high browed mixes have you ever really heard at a strip club? Enter XXX, the seedy collection of tunes just sleazy enough to fit that need.
What is the deal with The Passion Recut?
Category: Film News
Posted by Mark Runyon | March 16, 2005 | 12:15 PM
So why is this new version of the Passion being released into theatres during the Easter season? Is this truly a new look at this popular, controversial film or is it simply a way for Gibson to keep buying up the Fiji Islands with your Passion dollars? Gibson and his distributor, NewMarket films, decided to slice 6 minutes from the film in hopes of eliminating some of the ultra-violence that turned off some viewers. Interestingly the MPAA still slapped the edited version with an R rating, so how different can it really be? Admittedly, the Passion was a beautiful and moving film but cutting 6 minutes of the absurd, over the top violence doesn't even come close to giving this film the scrubbing it deserves to bring it in line with reality.

This is specifically aimed at the Atlanta readers out there or in the near vicinity. The Music Midtown line-up has been released and it is something. Keane, the Killers and the Pixies are all playing on Saturday with The White Stripes queued up on Friday. All this and bands are still being announced. I usually avoid this festival madness, but I think I'm going to have to dive into this great assembly of bands this year. Music Midtown will be going on from June 10 - 12.

Thievery Corporation - Cosmic Game

Grade: A- | Genre:
Electronic Chill
Summary: Thievery Corporation have charted their course in music through creating lush sonic soundscapes to live by. Cosmic Game is their best work since the groundbreaking Mirror Conspiracy and firmly establishes them as the gatekeepers to the kindgom of chill. |
 |
When I first heard Thievery Corporation's Mirror Conspiracy during my musical reawakening in 2000, I knew I'd happened across something brimming with greatness. In the span of an album, they defined electronic chill with an uncommon sound that craftily fused world influences (Indian, bossa nova) with traditional mellow trance beats. They recruited the vocal styling of LoLo to verbalize this heady feel and breath it to life. They have returned to the party every year since with a fresh set of thoughts yet none of them have proved as compelling as that first taste that melted into me. They would either loose their grip on their chill (Outernational Sound) or just forget an essential ingredient in the execution (The Richest Man in Babylon). None of these albums were bad, rather they seemed to be neglected stepchildren released from the cellar after years of isolation. They're eyes struggled to cope with the piercing light. Cosmic Game is a welcome return to the formula that initially issued them success, affording us this tantalizing recipe of songs.

One of the greatest actors to grace the silver screen is ready to call it a day. Newman says he plans to make one last film "for good luck". What a film it may be. He is suggesting it may be a reunion with his partner from the Sting and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Robert Redford. "I hate to talk about anything until the papers are drawn up, but we've been looking for something for 20 years and now we're looking harder," Newman said. "I hope something will come of it." He will also look to give up his other great passion - motor racing.

Grade: A | Genre:
Foreign Drama
Summary: "Maria Full of Grace" is a stunning portrayal of a young girl's desperate efforts to hold everything together as it all falls apart. Catalina Sandino Moreno is mesmerizing in her debut as Maria and gives the character the strength and "Grace" she deserves. |
 |
Starring: Catalina Sandino Moreno, Yenny Paola Vega, Guilied Lopez, Patricia Rae, and John Alex Toro
Director: Joshua Marston
A Columbian Mule is a drug smuggler trained in various transport methods such as swallowing illegal substances wrapped in rubber balloons the size of large grapes. Maria (Morena) is a 17-year-old Columbian teenager dealing with more responsibility than she can handle. She must help to provide for her financially unstable family as her mother is unable to do it alone. However, Maria just quit her dead end job and has now discovered that she is pregnant.

 |
Grade: B | Genre: Drama
Summary: I think this is an important film that needs to be seen, but it's certainly not for the light of heart. It's a tough movie to watch that doesn't offer you any hope. The only satisfaction we get once the credits roll is our knowledge that the Taliban is no longer in power. |
 |
Starring: Marina Golbahari, Arif Herati, Zubaida Sahar, Mohamad Haref Harati & Mohamad Nader Khadjeh
Director: Siddiq Barmak
Osama is a highly disturbing film. At its core, this is a scathing indictment on the Taliban regime and its detestable treatment of women. This film has the distinction of being the first to be made in post-Taliban Afghanistan. Director Siddiq Barmark's idea was sparked for this film from reading a newspaper account of a group of women struggling to survive in this repressive regime. This film is unique in that it uses no actors for these parts. This helps to establish the film's genuine feel.

 |
Grade: B+ | Genre: Drama
Summary: If you are looking for a shrewd period piece that flips everything you know about gender and forces you to take a new perspective, this is the film you've been waiting for. |
 |
Starring: Billy Crudup, Claire Danes and Rupert Everett
Director: Richard Eyre
Stage Beauty is a deft Shakespearean gender bender that proves incredibly fresh and unique. The film is set in 1660 England during a time when the crown had decreed that all women's theatrical parts would be played by men. We find out that this stems from a fanatic cleric who thought that allowing women to act on the stage would be to resign them to a life of prostitution and debauchery. Strangely, he didn't seem to have a problem with the fact that men would have to become transvestites to fill the vacuum he created. Kynston (Crudup) is the celebrity of her time, declared as the most beautiful woman on the stage as Othello's Desmonda. She has aristocratic groupies overtaken with blinding curiosity to know if Kynston still has his manhood firmly attached. Kynston has studied for countless years to play a woman. Through their passage, he has slowly worked out all of the masculine kinks that make him a man until he is a woman. He has sexual rendezvous with a fellow actor who is more enamored with the aura that surrounds his performance as Desmonda than with Kynston.
The Last Supper (1996)

Grade: A | Genre:
Black Comedy
Summary: "The Last Supper" is a brilliant satire supported by a strong cast. Each display interesting paradoxes in character. You witness the effects that the murders have on them and see gradual changes in their temperament and morals. |
 |
Starring: Cameron Diaz, Ron Eldard, Annabeth Gish, Jonathan Penner, Courtney B. Vance, and Bill Paxton
Director: Stacy Title
Back in a time when movies were a little more timid and story lines were more cautious, smaller indie pix began to emerge and boldly defied conventional wisdom. These films showed us the darker side of human nature and rubbed our noses in it. They were a slap in the face so that we would wake up and take notice.
1996's The Last Supper is a little known film that bravely challenges our morals. It's a dark comedy that will have you laughing out loud but at the same time, have you re-evaluating your belief system.

Grade: C- | Genre:
Comedy
Summary: You've forgotten about it before you've finished watching it assuming you're still awake. |
 |
Starring: Matthew Lillard, Seth Green, Dax Shepard & Burt Reynolds
Director: Stephen Brill
What is it about the no brainer comedy that causes us to seek them out on the video store shelves as if they were the English Patient? An even better question would be if they are so senselessly fun then why are they so damn hard to come by? I think that when it comes right down to it, a smart, original comedy that keeps us laughing and engaged while supporting some goofy, implausible story is pretty hard to write even though it ultimately comes off like two stoners hacked it out in a weekend. Without a Paddle is one of the disappointing ones that probably was churned out in a weekend. You've forgotten about it before you've finished watching it assuming you're still awake.

The darker and more violent film will see Anakin "make a pact with the devil," says George Lucas. He also says that it may not be something you'd want to bring your 5 year old to. Could this be the one that finally lives up to the hype?
