Summary: "After the Sunset" isn't totally unwatchable thanks to Salma Hayek and the first and last ten minutes of the film. Also, the chemistry between Brosnon and Harrelson (as opposed to Brosnon and Hayek) is genuine and the love/hate relationship that the two display almost turns the film into a buddy movie. |

Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Salma Hayek, Woody Harrelson, Don Cheadle, Naomie Harris
Director: Brett Ratner
Pierce Brosnon has built a career playing one suave English gentleman after another and "After the Sunset" is no exception. From the TV series "Remington Steel" to his stint as Double-O-Seven to several similar film roles, he has monopolized the market making it even more difficult to see him as anything else.
This time around, Brosnon stretches his acting chops playing instead, a suave IRISHMAN named Max Burdett, who has just pulled off his last heist and content to spend the rest of life on a tropical island resort with his partner in crime, Lola, played by eye-candy, Salma Hayek. Does your company offer that kind of retirement plan? Not all is well, however, as FBI agent Stan Lloyd (Harrelson) is out to bust the pair by foiling one final job.
"After the Sunset" begins with the heist of a precious diamond guarded in a briefcase by Stan and a team of FBI agents. Employing disguises and high-tech gadgets, Max and Lola make off with the jewel and are set for life. Six months fly by and we find the pair living a life of comfort and solitude on a resort island enjoying the finer perks of the job. Lola loves the advantages of retirement, while Max looks for other ways of curing the monotony.
Meanwhile, Agent Lloyd, humiliated since the diamond heist, has made his way down to the island hoping to catch the pair committing their next theft.
After the Sunset is "The Thomas Crown Affair" all over again. Like "Crown," the first and last ten minutes of the "Sunset" are all you need to watch. The story line is full of clichés that Brosnon himself helped to develop over the years. Salma Hayek is under utilized though casting her as the films sexpot was genius! Don Cheadle was good as usual but looked to be transitioning from "Ocean's 11" to "Ocean's 12."
Unfortunately, "After the Sunset" isn't as fun as a heist move should be. When the wife describes a movie as "cute" when it was never meant to be, it's a clear indication of where it failed. "Sunset" isn't totally unwatchable thanks to Hayek and the aforementioned first and last ten minutes of the film. Also, the chemistry between Brosnon and Harrelson (as opposed to Brosnon and Hayek) is genuine and the love/hate relationship that the two display almost turns the film into a buddy movie. If this film were a blow out success, this relationship could have been something that Hollywood revisited and capitalized on in the future.
Next up for Brosnon, "The Topkapi Affair" playing Thomas Crown as...you guest it...a suave English gentleman. I rest my case.
