Ivy - In the Clear
Category: Album Archive
Posted by Mark Runyon | April 29, 2005 | 11:35 PM
PM Rating System

Grade: A | Genre: Pop
Summary: While they fall painfully short of their defining work, Long Distance, that shouldn't keep you from soaking up every inch of this sound. In the Clear is a heady masterpiece.

How can you not love Dominique Durand? This siren's voice is softer than the finest silk. She is a seductress among women, feeding you a bottle of select French Bordeaux as her quiet purr brushes it's way against your ear. The pulse quickens, the heart shutters as you completely surrender yourself to her sweet hum. That voice is the thing that inspires a bunch of stray thoughts to band together to form epic Shakespearean sonnets. The grand mistress pulls back the blinds, which shield us from her lacerating charm, as Ivy opens us up to their latest work, In the Clear.

Road Trip to Coachella

Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails, Keane, Wilco, Snow Patrol, Jem, Rilo Kiley, Razorlight, Katie Melua, Jamie Cullum, Bright Eyes, the Arcade Fire as well as Tegan and Sara are only about a quarter of the stellar bands playing at this year's Coachella Valley Festival. This is a ridiculous amount of music featured over a two-day festival, as they seem to be vying to become the west coast version of Woodstock. Cram the car with your camping gear because this was why road trips were invented.

Can Napster's original file sharing renegade save the music biz against the social and technical revolution he created? His latest venture, Snocap, promises to turn P2P services from software pirating resources into profitable databases for legit downloads free from fears of copyright infingements. It basically acts as a "one-stop shop for rights management across multiple online retailers." His credibility with both the labels and the P2P community could be what pushes Snocap towards success, but will his idea take off. Read the full article from Business 2.0.

Alana Davis - Surrender Dorothy

PM Rating System

Grade: C- | Genre: Pop
Summary: This is a very disappointing disk. It's not that it's bad, it's just not very good. It doesn't live up to the standard that Alana has set for herself in her previous albums.

I often wonder about artists that stick critic signal flares in the title to their albums. Like Alana here. All I can think of when I read that title is, "I surrender, I surrender. Please don't make me listen to anymore of this." Yeah it's a tad bit mellow dramatic and taken to the extreme with concerns to the album in question, but why would you set yourself up for that inevitable punishment? This release is a sticky one. If you stumbled upon it, never having heard Alana before, you may fall in love with her voice, her unique rhythms and her undeniable charm, but don't give away your heart that easily. That yellow brick road is tarnished with disappointment.

Will there be one less doctor Scrubbing in next season?

One of our regular Scrubs is set to take off after this season according to show's creator Bill Lawrence. Lawrence was quoted as saying, "In medicine, if you try to stay true to it at all, this is the year -- because of the way they progress from intern to resident, people would have to go out and get new jobs and not always at the hospital they work in." Make sure you have May 17th marked on your calendar to see which doctor bids Sacred Heart a fond farewell in the season finale.

The demise of television's longest running military drama will come Friday night. The decision was more of a demographic one as the coveted 18 to 34 year old audience is just not there. This was the original reason NBC dropped the series after its first season before CBS picked it up. There were questions as to what would become of the show as David Elliott is set for departure because the series can't afford to renew his contract. So will the tease of mad chemistry Mac and Harm finally be resolved? I guess we'll have to tune in to find out for sure.

A Love Song for Bobby Long
Category: DVD Archive
Posted by Mark Runyon | April 26, 2005 | 06:20 PM
PM Rating System Grade: B+ | Genre: Independent Drama
Summary: This is a foggy love story about how each of these individuals loved Lorraine in their own unique way. Their love for her takes them on a journey from strangers to family as they find in one another those missing memories that create a family, to share the joy and support each other when the times turn hard.
A Love Song for Bobby LongStarring: John Travolta, Scarlett Johansson & Gabriel Macht
Director: Shainee Gabel

John Travolta is quite the interesting cat. He's an icon of American cinema who made disco cool in Saturday Night Fever, who taught us how to ride a mechanical bull in Urban Cowboy and showed us what it takes to be a gangster in Pulp Fiction. Yet for every role that cements his name in the annuals of acting lore, he seems to star in four bad films to offset it. For those brief moments that he shines, he forces us to completely forget about all those times we shuffled out of the theatre with the foul taste of disappointment stale in our mouths. Such is the case in a Love Song for Bobby Long. Travolta embraces the virtue of his talent in this thoughtful indie tale of strangers, family, and discovery.

Ticket brokers make it harder than ever to see top acts

Ticket scalping has been frustrating artists and fans for decades, and in the age of eBay, it's possible for anybody to buy and sell high-demand tickets for outrageous profits. But the bigger problem is that major ticket brokers have become far more nimble and sophisticated -- often using expensive software that enables them to get around ticketmaster.com's security and buy up large blocks of tickets before fans have the chance. "It's one of the worst aspects of capitalism," says Peter Harvey, attorney general of New Jersey, where selling tickets for fifty percent above face value is illegal. The state recently opened a $5 million anti-Internet-fraud crime lab with the FBI, and Harvey promises to use it to prosecute online scalpers.

Pixies, Weezer, Panic Set for Lollapalooza
Category: Music News
Posted by Patrick Vu | April 25, 2005 | 12:30 PM

Now this is what Lollapalooza should look like. We all remember when the music festival that catered to the alternative crowd began to lose it's appeal way before big arena bands like Metallica took over and headlined one of it's later and less popular tours. That marked the official end of Perry Ferrell's brain-child and cleared the way for similar music fests like The Horde and Warped Tours. Looking at the current list of acts (Pixies, Death Cab for Cutie, and Blue Merle) set to take stage for a revamp Lolla tour, it's exciting to see that music is front and center and not the corporate dollars that inevitably put the final nail in the coffin. Unfortunately, those outside of Chicago's Grant Park will have to wait and hope that the tour picks up and come to a town nearby.

Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner Said Engaged
Category: Misc
Posted by Patrick Vu | April 22, 2005 | 01:20 PM

Please forgive this temporary foray into gossip journalism, but we just have to comment on our girl, Jennifer Garner. The rising star has yet to redeem herself after the regrettable, Elektra, and looks to continue her string of bad luck with her latest error in judgement...her reported engagement to Ben Affleck. "Bennifer Part Deux" or my favorite "Againifer" has the makings of a box-office-like flop, and we can only stand to the side and shake our heads. What's going on here? Alias feels like it's missing something and the movie career is off to a rocky start. Once again, we have to put the focus on Affleck, who probably needs to let go of the Jennifers and head back to the nurturing arms of Matt Damon to help revive a career that lately has been highlighted, not by anything in film, but by a big win at a well known Texas Hold 'em Poker tournament. J-Lo is on the road to recovery and might make a nice comback in Monster-in-Law, which also stars Garner's former love, Michael Vartan. Let's just wish the Garner-Afflecks (yes, Garner should come before Affleck) the best of luck and help pick up the pieces when it all comes crashing down.

Summary: The House of Flying Daggers plays like a sublimely delicate opera that can appeal to both sexes. The visions and the sounds illuminate everything it touches and their beauty hypnotizes you.
House of Flying DaggersStarring: Zhang Ziyi, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Andy Lau, and Dandan Song
Director: Zhang Yimou

For so long, action films have continued to push the limits of brutality with unflinching realism. The line between thrilling and morbidly gruesome is consistently smudged and the movie going audience can only brace themselves for what they are or aren't about to see. Because we've been so conditioned to expect more, we can't even imagine how breathtaking and beautiful an action sequence can be.

The House of Flying Daggers gracefully swoops over the likes of Natural Born Killers and Sin City and has us mesmerized with each perfectly shot frame. It's a visually stunning piece of motion picture art that should be displayed in one's most prized collection.

Suspect ZeroStarring: Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Kevin Chamberlin
Director: E. Elias Merhige

The "Suspect Zero" theory suggests that there is one serial killer responsible for the number of unsolved murders that still exist. So, how do you find a killer when there is no concrete trail to follow?

My friend Amy and I were killing time before Razorlight took the stage at Tabernacle the other night. We'd spent the last three evenings around one another so the conversation well was sufficiently dry at that point. I was busy visually scanning the crowd when I overheard the girl next to us discussing the sublime experience she had at a limited seating concert for Christina Aguilera. After my inner music snob got through rolling on the floor laughing, I had a brilliant thought. What if, as part of the admission, they printed the first show you'd ever been to, followed by your favorite show square on your forehead. After some discussion, it was decided that the first show you'd ever been to had to be a voluntarily effort on your part for the purpose of seeing that show (i.e. my seeing the Beach Boys after a Braves game doesn't count). Think of the interesting conversation that could be triggered by doing this. Screw buying the world a Coke, this could be the answer to bridging the societal divide. So this stirred the thought pot and I've taken it a step further laying out the 10 best shows I've experienced in my life. They were all a high on so many different levels so let's get to it.

Coldplay fans have sat in breathless anticipation for the June 7th release of the band's latest album X&Y. The first single off the disk, "Speed of Sound", is currently available on iTunes for download.

Evidently, Chris is getting a bit daring in his old age. While playing a secret show in east London, he scaled the main speaker set to get up to the balcony. Was Jennifer Garner up there making eyes at him? No, it was only everyone's favorite wanker, Noel Gallagher. The two promptly hugged then Chris managed to jump the 15 feet to get back on stage. Chris, my man, he isn't worth a cracked skull much less a sprained ankle. Read the full article, including the show's setlist, at NME.

PM Rating System Grade: D+ | Genre: Science Fiction
Summary: "Care for a little necrophilia?" is just one of the gems you will hear in this outrageous futuristic drama by Terry Gilliam. This film is a mess from start to finish, though you do see flashes of Gilliam's brilliance that would resurface in much better pictures like the Fisher King and 12 Monkeys.
BrazilStarring: Jonathan Pryce, Robert DeNiro, Ian Holm, Kim Greist & Katherine Helmond
Director: Terry Gilliam

What can I say? I've missed our pal Terry over the last several years. He dazzled us the ground breaking 12 Monkeys in 1995 followed by the psychedelic acid trip of translating Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to the screen. He's been quiet ever since. After hearing that he has a new feature coming out later this year (the Brothers Grimm featuring Matt Damon), I couldn't help but dig around in his back catalog to see what I could dust off to try on as new. Brazil looked just quirky enough to get my Gilliam fix. Had I only known what I was getting myself into, I would have queued up 12 Monkeys for the hundredth time instead.

Ivy - Nico Meets New Order
Category: Artist Profiles

The story goes that more than 10 years ago Parisian-born Dominique Durand came to the United States to learn how to speak English. She had never sung before and had no aspirations to front a band. But Adam Schlesinger must have known what he had on his hands. Schlesinger, who would later display his awesome ability to create catchy pop tributes (as displayed when he penned the Beatle-drenched "That Thing You Do!" for the Tom Hanks film of the same name as an assignment), must have heard one breathy, heavily accented word from Dominique's mouth and knew that he had a shot at forming his own private Velvet Underground. The trio was rounded out with Andy Chase and Ivy was born.

The WoodsmanStarring: Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Mos Def, Benjamin Bratt, Eve & David Alan Grier
Director: Nicole Kassell

I go to films asking to be challenged. I want a film to trigger an emotion, regardless of what that emotion may be. The Woodsman answered the call, taking me to the brink and, for a moment, past it. There is one scene where I almost turned off the film because I was so disturbed by what I saw. Instead, I took a moment to pause it and step away. After I caught my breath, I thankfully returned to see the critical moment of Walter's redemption, but it was a trying call to make. This is a harsh film dealing with an extremely difficult subject matter -- child molestation. It's worth the look, but proceed with caution.

We did it when we stumbled upon Telepopmusik during a Mitsubishi commercial and again when we learned about Dirty Vegas from the same auto company.

Last week, before I had a chance to step away for a commercial break during an episode of The Office, I found myself being sold the Pontiac G6. However, its failure to make me want to buy became my gain as the brief little tune used in the commercial attracted all my attention. Forget how much horse-power the G6 delievered, my focus was on finding out more about the music. Thanks to our friends at Google, the name of the song was "Son's Gonna Rise" by little known artist, Citizen Cope.

Matthew Jay Lives on in Final Album
Category: Music News
Posted by Mark Runyon | April 15, 2005 | 09:30 AM

Late 2003 was a particularly tragic time for music as we lost two of its most promising young artists, Elliott Smith and Matthew Jay, in the span of a month. While Elliott Smith had an album (from a basement on the hill) finished and awaiting release at the time, allowing fans one last glimpse into this tormented soul, the same wasn't true of Jay. I made my way to Jay's website and discovered that another album, ...Too Soon, was released last October compiling early recordings and rarities available only via his web site.

Eric Matthews - Six Kinds of Passion
Category: Album Archive
Posted by Mark Runyon | April 14, 2005 | 05:23 PM
PM Rating System Grade: B- | Genre: Chamber Pop
Summary: Six Kinds of Passion Looking for an Exit is basically a tray of hors devours. While they are tasty and quell the hunger, you are left feeling a bit unsatisfied and still wanting.
Eric Matthews - Six Kinds of Passion Looking for an ExitEven the most ardent follower of indie music probably hasn't made time for Eric Matthews, which is a shame. Matthews released two albums in the mid-90's as a part of Sub Pop that were solid, yet never garnered much attention in the press or across the airwaves. Matthews tends to dabble across the musical spectrum to create these visions of orchestral pop melodies that are smooth and fluid. Matthews creates a distinctive tone with his careful arrangements and unique vocal presence on Six Kinds of Passion.

Is Sideways a sly buddy picture, a film for wine lovers or a defining character study? Actually, it's all of the above. How can all of these be accomplished on even footing in the span of a two-hour feature? Leave that to the talents of Alexander Payne. Death Cab for Cutie Preps New Album

The Seattle band Death Cab for Cutie is busily preparing their new album, Plans. For some strange reason, the record label has exiled them to a barn in the middle of nowhere Massachusetts to record the new album. Plans is said to have a healthy helping of depressing love songs that the Death Cab following will no doubt find comforting. Ben Gibbard wrote the album over the past two years in between touring dates and producer/guitarist, Walla, says it's his best work to date. Plans will mark Death Cab's major label debut on Atlantic, which is due out in August.

Shrek originally didn't have a Scottish accent

When the principle animation for Shrek was finished, Mike Myers decided that the title character would be stronger with a Scottish accent. So he requested that he be allowed to redo all of his lines, which required months of additional work and cost about 4 million dollars. It was a gutsy move that, fortunately for Myers, paid off in the end.

Muse & Razorlight at the Tabernacle
Category: Concert Reviews
Posted by Mark Runyon | April 11, 2005 | 08:45 PM
PM Rating System Grade: B | Genre: British Rock
Summary: This was a very high-energy show that was carried on a dynamic crowd and Muse's epic sound. I do wish Razorlight could have made a stronger showing by balancing out their sound more evenly and we could have gotten Matt Bellamy to give us a little something beyond the music.
MuseDate: April 10, 2005
Location: the Tabernacle - Atlanta, GA

Ears...must...stop...ringing. You know you've done some permanent damage when your ears are still ringing the day after a show. That blood can't be a good sign either. That was the first thing you noticed about the Muse / Razorlight show -- it was friggin' loud. There were a couple numbers during Razorlight's set that were seriously piercing then I guess my ears were bludgeoned into submission because I didn't really notice it after that. Man, I'm getting old. Oh well, hearing your grandchildren is an overrated experience anyway. The British invasion was definitely underway as Muse and Razorlight stormed the stages of Tabernacle wielding their electrifying tunes wearing the heavy cloak of rock's salvation.

Grey's Anatomy bumps Boston Legal

I was in a heated discussion a couple weeks ago on Blogcritics over Grey's Anatomy swiping Boston Legal's choice 10pm time slot on ABC. It looks like it will come to pass after all. ABC has announced that Grey's will keep its Sunday night slot and Boston Legal's season will be cut short to accomodate this. It isn't currently known where Boston Legal will end up, but the bump is yet another set back for the retooled version of the Practice.

PM Rating System Grade: A | Genre: Drama Series
Summary: In its heyday, 21 Jump Street was special because it was the only show focused on serious matters that teens faced. Such bold topics like teen pornography, drug trafficing, and AIDS were regularly addressed and had America's youth, including myself, captivated.
Starring: Johnny Depp, Dustin Nguyen, Peter DeLuise, and Holly Robinson, and Steven Williams
Network: Fox

21 Jump Street: Seasons 1 and 2Before Beverly Hills 90120 and similar programs slanted toward youth culture, there was a show known today as being the launching pad for a young Johnny Depp. Dig deeper and you'll find a drama with a loyal cult following thanks to its edgy story lines focused on teen drama.

At the time, 21 Jump Street was the FOX network's only hour-long program that also took risks by touching on mature social issues such as sexuality, drugs, and suicide.

Thirteen Senses - The Invitation
Category: Album Archive
Posted by Patrick Vu | April 11, 2005 | 12:02 AM
PM Rating System Grade: C | Genre: Rock
Summary: Though it's decent album and one that many critics will probably argue about, there just isn't enough creativity to fill all your "Thirteen Senses."
Thirteen Senses - The InvitationFor a while now, British exports like Coldplay, Doves, and Travis have made the UK music scene a wealthy source of soulful tunes that promote personal introspection. These bands have successfully crafted songs that are able to sum up our deepest emotions by playing to our most sensitive feelings.

Being compared to the likes of Coldplay and Travis is nothing to sneeze at and a great way to gain some band recognition. Thirteen Senses, one of the newer British exports, arrives just in time to take a piece of the pie before it runs out...or has it?

Elektra

PM Rating System Grade: D | Genre: Action
Summary: Not even the very likable Jennifer Garner could save Elektra. The special effects were the real story, where Elektra was a mere sub plot.
ElektraStarring: Jennifer Garner, Goran Visnjic, Kirsten Prout, Will Yun Lee, and Terence Stamp
Director: Rob Bowman

As I prepared to kick back to the Elektra DVD, I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt by not letting the horrid reviews it received affect my judgment. After about 15 minutes or so, I began wondering whether or not it was a good idea for 20th Century Fox to resurrect Elektra and put her in a movie of her own. In Daredevil, Jennifer Garner's star shined brightly as she made the film better than Affleck could have ever imagined even though her character was killed. Unfortunately, as her Elektra came back to life, she forgot to resurrect the charm that died in Daredevil.

Ours took up residence in modern rock four years ago with the release of their debut, Distorted Lullabies. It is still one of the best albums ever made in my humble opinion. They released Precious the following year which befell the dreaded Sophmore slump as creative control was pulled away by the producer. After a good gap of silence, Gnecco is back on the record talking about the status of Ours, the comparisons to Jeff Buckley and how he's grown as an artist since Precious.

Marc Broussard at the Loft

PM Rating System Grade: A- | Genre: Modern Rock
Summary: If you ever get the chance to see this talented man perform, make sure you have a ticket. Also, I'd make a point to do it sooner rather than later. The secret of Marc Broussard isn't going to be kept under wraps for much longer.
Marc BroussardDate: April 8, 2005
Location: the Loft - Atlanta, GA
Supporting Opener: Will Hoge & Sarah Bareilles

Marc Broussard descended on the Loft Thursday night in compelling fashion. Broussard, a black man trapped in the body of a white man, brought together his perfect blend of soul, funk, jazz and rock to release thumping jams and purring melodies. This rip roaring Cajun hails from the heartland of Louisiana and you can see the state's rich musical tradition has been absorbed in every pore of his body until it has become an inseparable part of his being.

It's not surprising to hear of diehard "Star Wars" geeks lining up more than a month in advance before "Episode III - Revenge of the Sith's" opening. What's interesting is that these fans are raising awareness and hoping to have the film premiere at Grauman's famous Chinese theatre in Hollywood instead of at a newer theatre a few blocks down. Apparently, it's a "time-honored tradition" that geeks in the area live by. Read the Newsweek article.

MTV Launches Internet Web Channel

When MTV began showing less and less music videos in favor of more and more Reality content, they created MTV2, which seems to be heading in the same direction. So instead of not getting your favorite videos via MTV, the channel that revolutionized the genre, you can now get it on demand through MTV's web-based "Overdrive." This is definitely long overdue, but what about the TV format? What happens when WebMTV suffers the same demise as its predecessors. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Stars - Set Yourself on Fire
Category: Album Archive
Posted by Mark Runyon | April 08, 2005 | 01:44 AM
PM Rating System Grade: B- | Genre: Electropop
Summary: Set Yourself on Fire is very solid pop music that makes you hopefully for the future of the genre, yet for all its merits it doesn't stick to your bones the way it should.
Stars - Set Yourself on FireThe Stars are artisans of intriguing pop as is displayed in their third studio release, Set Yourself on Fire. They largely fall into the domain of smart, college radio electropop with their fuzzy guitars arrangements with an eye slanted towards experimentation. The Stars hail out of Montreal, Canada and are part of the burgeoning music scene that includes rising talents like the Arcade Fire and, Star's collaborators and sometimes band mates, Broken Social Scene. Pinning down their sound isn't an easy task. There is a hint of Velocity Girl, touches of Death Cab for Cutie and just of dash of Stereophonics.

The next bond film is to be called "Casino Royale," Ian Fleming's first Bond book, which has the agent at the beginning of his spy career. So, the Brosnon rumours may be just be that, rumours.

I ran across this commentary piece, and I thought what a great idea to assemble my own top 10 list of the best baseball films. So under the guise of TV news, I'll chime in here on the wondrous victory that was North Carolina's Monday night. It was a see saw battle for the ages with Carolina charging ahead to the half only to have the Illini come back and tie it up at the two minute mark. It was the perfect end to what had to be one of the best tournaments in the history of college basketball. Page 2 featured select thoughts on the aftermath of North Carolina/Illnois. Jordon and Dean Smith as tense spectators, the joy of a bench player, McCants' new baby and several other keen observations that wrap up this beautiful moment.
