Grey's Anatomy: Season 1 Finale

PM Rating System

Episode: B+ | Season: A | Genre: Drama
Summary: The season finale of Grey's Anatomy didn't feel anymore dramatic than any other episode, which was a welcomed thing. It's nice to have a show that seems to value consistency over bending the reality of their TV universe.

Sex, lies and syphilis descend on Seattle Grace Hospital for the season finale of ABC's newest hit drama Grey's Anatomy. Yes sad to say that after its abbreviated first season, Grey's Anatomy will give way to summer as we say goodbye to our new favorite interns and attendings. This episode doesn't drop the usual bombshells on us that we've come to expect from the May sweeps, but they certainly see fit to leave us hanging with one plot wrench that is sure to shake up things when they pick up their stethoscopes in the fall.

George (T.R. Knight) seems to have finally gotten over his Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) fixation by getting down and dirty with his nurse on call from last week. What George wasn't aware of was he didn't have a monopoly on the down and dirty with said nurse. A strange rash presents itself and wahlah our boy has syphilis. He attempts to keep his little secret from the prying gossipy lips of Izzie (Katherine Heigl), but it would be easier to attempt to plant trees in the midst of a typhoon. The problem is George isn't the only one who has caught this fun venereal disease. After a fairly humorous meeting is called to inform everyone of the small outbreak among hospital staff, including a safe sex demonstration ("with every fresh banana, use a fresh condom"), the squirming can of worms of everyone's sex lives is plucked open for all to see.

This episode seems to revolve around secrets and yanking the shade off the lamp. Meredith skirts around the subject with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) of whether or not she should get tested. Christina (Sandra Oh) with Burke (Isaiah Washington) and the conversation keeps trickling down through the staff that is getting friendly with one another. It seems to be the first real relationship talk between these couples to see just how serious this new exercise in bed hopping really is. That is certainly one-way to approach the question of whether you are seeing each other exclusively or not. The better question remained, whom is the doctor floating around the syphilis? Do I really need to draw you a road map on this one?

Besides our various sexcapades, there are a few peculiar developments on the medical front. Dr. Burke discovers his best friend has an ovary, which wouldn't be quite so strange except that this person happens to be a man. During surgery, he discovers his friend is sterile which outs his unfaithful wife, carrying their child. Burke is shoved into the difficult position of upsetting the balance of his friend's world or letting dogs lie. Izzie and Christina take on their first unassisted procedure and end up losing the patient. Their troubled minds are busy manufacturing guilt and curiosity over the true cause of death, which lands them in a heap of trouble that, in the end, works out to their favor.

And so I don't completely ruin this for the ladies and gents who may have Tivo'ed this episode, Meredith gets her world rocked by an unexpected discovery from Derek. If you completely missed it and it's eating away at you like a hungry mobster in a cannoli shop, feel free to highlight the next line with your mouse. **It seems Meredith's favorite boy toy is already married** Now that's a scoop worthy of Wisteria Lane.

The season finale of Grey's Anatomy didn't feel anymore dramatic than any other episode, which was a welcomed thing. After watching the two-hour pre-season finale for Alias last week, capping an extremely tepid season with more plot twists than rabid sidewinder, it's nice to have a show that seems to value consistency over bending the reality of their TV universe. This show constantly surprises me, keeping you engaged in these characters and cheering on the human drama lining their lives. No knock to the clever Brit import the Office, but Grey's Anatomy is the strongest show to join the party this season. If it maintains its solid storytelling fortified with this grade 'A' cast, it should prove a well-deserved ratings boon for ABC that we can all be proud to say we watch.

Original Airdate: May 22, Sunday 10/9c
Season Finale: 01.09 "Who's Zoomin' Who?"
