The Sea Inside (Mar Adentro)

Grade: A- |
Genre: Foreign
Summary: The Sea Inside is a deeply moving film that takes on the extremely volatile subject matter of euthanasia with knowledge and grace.
A man has been paralyzed from the neck down for 28 years. He decided long ago that life isn't worth living as he's deemed the quality of life to be basically zero. This isn't a rash decision that was haphazardly made upon awaking one gloomy morning or in a depressed state one drunken evening. It is an intention he's carried with him for the better part of his life, which he is unable to carry out himself due to his circumstance. He is of sound mind and discusses the topic rather matter of factly as you or I would the weather or whose turn it is to take out the trash. Is it really for any of us to say that he must keep living against his will? Is it right to prosecute someone who helps him carry out this deep seeded wish? The Sea Inside is a film that deals with the daunting issue of euthanasia, putting a face and a life on an issue that sparks much religious fervor and heated debate. This eloquent film looks to answer the question regarding if we really have the right to make someone live whose desire for life retreated long ago. |

Genre: Documentary
Summary: Caouette is an extremely talented filmmaker who has created a deeply moving work in Tarnation. It is the portrait of a family in disintegration, ravaged by mental disease that afflicts each of its members in different ways.
There are certain films that come along ever so often that shrug off the words. They defy description and peel off the labels you try to stick to them. They are always tough works of art that make you question yourself and your world. They loiter around in your mind when the film goes quiet and life resumes. Sometimes we are better for having seen them, sometimes worse, but their impact leaves a divot in our brain that will never go back to the way it was before. Tarnation is one of these films. It is a hard, uncomfortable look at a family plagued by mental illness, shadowing three generations. |
A First Look at Batman Begins
Category: Film News
Posted by Mark Runyon | May 30, 2005 | 06:12 PM
Batman is back. After four films about the caped crusader, beginning famously in 1989 with Tim Burton's gothic original and ending infamously in 1997 with Joel Schumacher's benippled Batsuit, the franchise suffered a run of aborted reboots until Warners brought in Nolan, 34, the gifted mind behind Memento, whose no-frills approach was just what the bloated Batman saga needed. His pitch: let's start from scratch. Batman Begins, which opens on June 15, rewinds all the way to Bruce Wayne's days as a Princeton graduate and explains exactly how and why he acquired a Batsuit, a cave, a souped-up car and a yen for cracking the skulls of evildoers. The film is also a stylistic rebirth. Nolan's vision doesn't have a trace of comic-book-movie excess; it's a globetrotting epic--Bruce Wayne goes to Bhutan!--in the mold of the adventure movies he grew up adoring.

Grade: A+ |
Genre: Hip Hop/Progressive Rock
Summary: Demon Days, "side project" or not, takes risks and is able to present a work of incomparable brilliance. In this reviewer's eyes, the pressure is definitely off the Gorillaz to produce an album capable of changing ones fortunes.
Four years ago, you couldn't escape the Gorillaz' infectious hit, "Clint Eastwood," from their self-titled debut . It was the slacker jam of Summer 2001, and you can still hear its meandering piano chords while Del tha Funkee Homosapien took you for a ride you've never before been on.
Conceived as the first "virtual hip-hop group," the quirky bunch of cartoon MC's are back with their latest, Demon Days, and continue to push the limits of Hip Hop and Prog Rock. With the blended contributions of De La Soul, Shaun Ryder, Debbie Harry, Dennis Hopper, and Martina Topley-Bird, Demon Days spotlights the Gorillaz' out-the-box thinking and genre blurring talents. |

Nine Inch Nails drops MTV show over image of Bush

Nine Inch Nails have cancelled their performance at the MTV Movie Awards because of a disagreement with the network over the band's use of a George W. Bush picture.
"Apparently the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me," frontman Trent Reznor posted on NIN's Web site Thursday.
The band was planning to perform its politically charged single "The Hand That Feeds" with the Bush image as a backdrop. The song features the lyrics, "Inside your heart it is black and it's hollow and it's cold . . . There's a price to be paid for the blood on which we dine/Justified in the name of the holy and the divine."

Queer as Folk: Season 5 Premiere

 |
Grade: B |
Genre: Drama
Summary: While it's still lugging around a lot of soap opera baggage, the season premiere has shown a lot of promise by getting back to the roots of what made the series magnetic in the beginning.
The boys of Liberty Avenue are back opening their fifth and final season of Queer as Folk. It doesn't seem like five years have passed since the Showtime series began the Herculean task of opening minds through their raw portrayal of gay and lesbian life, helping to pave the way for other series like the L Word. It's first season marked the first time that gay and lesbian characters really took center stage and weren't a comedic device for their heterosexual cast members to apply tired stereotypes. Folk has never shied away from the gritty realities of gay life, frequently including explicit sex scenes and raw dialog that would make the major networks squirm in their seats. Though the story of these lives is finding its way to an end, the imprint of this show will be felt in programming long after the music stops and the dance floor vacates at Babylon. |

With Popcorn, DVD's and TiVo, Moviegoers Are Staying Home
Category: Film News
Posted by Mark Runyon | May 27, 2005 | 01:12 PM
Many Americans are changing how they watch movies - especially young people, the most avid moviegoers. For 13 weekends in a row, box-office receipts have been down compared with a year ago, despite the blockbuster opening of the final Star Wars movie. And movie executives are unsure whether the trend will end over the important Memorial Day weekend that officially begins the summer season. Meanwhile, sales of DVD's and other types of new media continue to surge.
With box-office attendance sliding, so far, for the third consecutive year, many in the industry are starting to ask whether the slump is just part of a cyclical swing driven mostly by a crop of weak movies or whether it reflects a much bigger change in the way Americans look to be entertained - a change that will pose serious new challenges to Hollywood.

Alias: Season 4 Finale

Episode: B- | Season: C |
Genre: Drama
Summary: This episode was just silly. While the revelation at the end definitely hooked you for next season, it didn't do much to redeem the 59 minutes that came before it.
This season of Alias has been like a bad dream that you can't seem to wake up from. First, the gang gets branched off from the C.I.A. in the form of a covert group A.P.O. (Authorized Personnel Only -- so cheesy I can't say it without crackers). Then we find out Sloan is heading this group by some bizarre twist of fate. Since then the episodes have slowly sunk in quality, seeming to gravitate to the supernatural and more soap opera-esque moments. The show is hopelessly tarnished, and I've found myself questioning whether I should actually turn on the TV Wednesday nights. But the same incredible magnetism that made the God-awful Daredevil a must-see is toying with me again -- Jennifer Garner. The woman is blindingly hot. She is the reining champ of my top 5 list four years running, and I haven't seen a woman yet that's got the goods to dethrone her. Last night, it was time to bid a fond farewell to our Alias crew for another season in hopes that they will hire a new writing team over the summer. |

If the song "It's a Small World" has ever driven you bananas, then you've got an idea where this story is going. We've all had tunes stuck in our heads. Some of them remind us of childhood friends, places or events.
A new study backs the obvious notion that a song can evoke strong memories. It also reveals that you don't even have to hear a song for the past to come flooding back. In fact, most people have an amazing ability to effectively hear songs that aren't even being played.

Ray LaMontagne: music man
Category: Artist Profiles
Posted by Mark Runyon | May 26, 2005 | 11:19 AM
Ray LaMontagne believes in the power of music. "I'm a real music lover," the 31-year-old singer-songwriter said, calling from his home in Wilton, Maine. "I know there are some people who never listen to music and it's just hard to imagine for me. Nothing can make me feel the way music can."
His devotion shows in his major-label debut, Trouble (RCA), in the way he makes lines such as "I've been saved" sound like an Otis Redding triumph in the title track or the way "How Come" recaptures the Americana swagger of The Band circa 1969. It shows in the way LaMontagne deliberately avoids the concerts of his heroes such as Bob Dylan and even the appearances of contemporaries he respects such as Ryan Adams.

Summary: Co-Executive Producer, Sylvestor Stallone, has taken the Rocky franchise and translated it onto the small screen with the same heart and emotion that made "The Italian Stallion" so endearing. It was a knock out of a season, and we can only hope it makes it way back to NBC.
The Contender series gave 16 boxing professionals the chance to jump-start a career they've long fantasized about. All have different backgrounds but with the same desire to succeed in a sport in which they've invested so much of themselves.
What has been one of the more engaging new programs of the current television season, scripted or reality, finally came to an end last night in a show down between the East Coast's "Pride of Providence," Peter Manfredo, and the man they call the "Latin Snake," Sergio Mora, from the West. It was a fight driven by the love for their families and the will to make better and more stable lives for themselves. |

Grade: C+ |
Genre: Suspense
Summary: Surprisingly, this is an enjoyable film, but it's quite mindless. It doesn't offer anything fresh or new to the adventure genre and comes off as a poor man's Indiana Jones.
What if Indiana Jones had plotted his daring adventures in America instead of the leaping through the rich history across the globe? We're not talking about the golden cross of Coronado or anything remotely cool like that. No, we are rolling the date back to the Revolutionary War some 200 years ago, a mere blip in most countries' heritages. What if Indie searched for a treasure passed from the Egyptians, to the Crusaders and ultimately to the Free Masons, better knows as our founding fathers? Sound a little far fetched and more than a bit out there? Welcome to National Treasure, the film where reality never existed. If you enjoy adventure films that don't require you to use any of your mental facilities, I have the perfect film for you. |

Queer as Folk is firing up its fifth and final season which debuted last night (check out Yahoo TV to see when you can catch it again). Even though it has slipped away from its edgy content in recent years, it is still the most honest look at homosexual life on television. Don't even get me started on the watered down Will & Grace. In an age fueled by controversy over gay marriage and general misinformation about the gay and lesbian community, shows like Queer as Folk are the shining light showing us a life not so far removed from our own.

Andrew Reid, head of audiology at the Royal United Hospital in Bristol, said: "This is a big problem for young people, and there is a real risk that prolonged listening could lead to permanent hearing damage."
Mr Reid added: "If you are on a Tube, you have to turn the player up to dangerous levels just to hear it. Over time, this is going to lead to problems like tinnitus and severe damage to the inner ear." Tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss occurs when the delicate hair nerve cells that line the inner ear suffer repeated trauma from loud sound vibrations.

Lindsay Lohan has a mission ... and she wants to accept it. The actress/singer says she has met with Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams regarding the possibility of starring in the third installment of the 1960s TV show remake.

Aimee Mann - The Forgotten Arm

Grade: B+ |
Genre: Alternative Pop
Summary: It doesn't have the stellar breakthrough songs that shifted Magnolia into everyone's line of sight, but it really doesn't need them. It offers us a winding story without a single track that can be overlooked.
Here is an interesting mental picture to doodle into your brain. Take the rather waifish, sensitive songwriter, Aimee Mann, strap on a pair of the boxing gloves, then let her loose to beat the crap out of someone. No, this isn't just another metaphor to support her heavyweight concept album The Forgotten Arm, this is Mann's new passion -- boxing. I say all the more power to you sister. Her workout routine that has transformed into her burning obsession is the fuel for the ideas of this new stellar work. Look out Hillary Swank. We've got a new feisty contender stepping through the ropes. |
Arrested Development, 24 Return to Fox Line-up
Category: Television News

After several weeks of negotiations, Fox Broadcasting Co. has sealed a deal to bring back real-time political thriller 24 for two more seasons. The network has also given a last-minute renewal to reigning best-comedy Emmy winner Arrested Development, which has been on the bubble since the network cut back the show's second-season order in the spring because of underwhelming ratings.
While there has been a lot of buzz about getting a short order for next season, Fox's decision to pick up a full-season, 22-episode order of the quirky series, comes as somewhat of a surprise.

Reality bites for Trump's Chumps
Category: Television Commentary
Posted by Patrick Vu | May 16, 2005 | 12:17 PM
Does new found power automatically go along with being the one hired by Donald Trump? Ask previous Apprentice winners, Bill Rancic and Kelly Perdew, and they'll do their best to hype their hypeless jobs. After all, "It's a little bit too much to ask someone to be the president of an $800 million building when they haven't had that kind of experience," says Trump. This season's lock, Kendra Todd, shouldn't expect too much responsibility, but I wouldn't expect Todd, who could run circles around Rancic and Perdew blindfolded, to remain passive. Garbage - Bleed Like Me

Grade: B |
Genre: Alternative Rock
Summary: While this doesn't rise to the vision and artistry of Version 2.0, Bleed Like Me is definitely a prime disk to throw in to jack you up. It's pretty challenging to fight off a good mood and not enjoy life while listening to it.
Spring is stepping out of the way as we charge head long into summer. It's that special time of year when you can't wait to escape the chains of work each afternoon to partake in your daily run. When the male libido comes out of hibernation at the sight of super short shorts and low cut blouses as well as the perfect time to put the top down and chart your course for the mountains in an afternoon peeling around some mind-bending turns. Granted gas prices are going to put a bit of a damper on the seasonal road trip, but work with me here people. So we have the 'Vette all fueled up, we just need a little driving music to set the tone. Great driving music should have slick beats, stamped by a strong vocal presence and more than anything, be fun to listen to. Well that album is Garbage's latest effort Bleed Like Me. |
Star Wars Raises Questions with U.S. Foreign Policy
Category: Film News
Posted by Mark Runyon | May 15, 2005 | 02:55 PM
Without Michael Moore and Fahrenheit 9/11 at the Cannes Film Festival this time, it was left to George Lucas and Star Wars to pique European ire over the state of world relations and the United States' role in it.
Lucas' themes of democracy on the skids and a ruler preaching war to preserve the peace predate Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith by almost 30 years. Yet viewers Sunday and Lucas himself noted similarities between the final chapter of his sci-fi saga and our own troubled times.
Cannes audiences made blunt comparisons between Revenge of the Sith the story of Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side and the rise of an emperor through warmongering to President Bush's war on terrorism and the invasion of Iraq.

Bobby Valentino - Self Titled

 |
Grade: C+ |
Genre: R&B
Summary: Unfortunately, the album doesn't do much to break the mold of the R&B Mack Daddy. The beats are there (initially), but the lyrics are a bit trite and get old very quickly.
Since R. Kelly is busy dealing with the kids (in the Michael Jackson sort of way), the R&B world has been without a dominant soulful crooner who's all about the ladies. Copycats and wannabes have come and gone, but there still has yet to be a successor fit to handle Kelly's backstage perks.
Next in line for the job is newcomer, Bobby Valentino, who is the first act signed to Ludacris' Disturbing Tha Peace label. After endless reviews of alt rock albums, Valentino's Self-titled debut is a refreshing change of pace that unfortunately gets old very quickly. |
Van Sant Brings Cobain's Last Days to Cannes
Category: Film News

Last Days, by former Palme d'Or winning director Gus Van Sant, portrays the inner turmoil that engulfs a troubled musician in the final days of his life. While Van Sant has admitted the film is inspired by Cobain and the Seattle music scene of the time, he has pointed out that it is still a work of fiction.
But parallels between Cobain and main character Blake are there to be seen. From the messy blond hair of actor Michael Pitt to suggestions that his character has spent time in drug re-hab - the main character is a Cobain-like figure. Moreover, the film is set in 1994 - the year Cobain shot himself.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

 |
Grade: C- |
Genre: Comedy
Summary: While this is a far cry from being an unwatchable film, it is still very lackluster and can be tedious at times to sit through.
The Godfather of quirky, Wes Anderson, has come for a visit bringing his latest sea adventure The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Anderson always balances on such a fine line. There is no question that he is one of the most innovative directors in Hollywood, but his level of unconventionality sometimes gets him in deep water. After all without a striking story and absorbing characters, you just have this huge ball of quirk bounding down a hill, mowing over everything in its path. The Life Aquatic is that ball, and though he may fascinate us with the bountiful tricks up his sleeve, it simply stuns us for long enough to get squashed. |

Garbage: Punching Back
Category: Artist Profiles
Posted by Mark Runyon | May 12, 2005 | 02:41 PM
It was the best of times, it was most assuredly the worst of times. Initially, 2001 looked like a banner year for peppy techno-rock quartet Garbage. Still swooning from the alterna-chart success of its eponymous 1995 debut and punkier '98 followup Version 2.0, the band--comprised of three brainiac producer/ prodigies and a Scottish siren named Shirley Manson--believed the release of its third salvo Beautiful Garbage would be a career-topping cakewalk. But Dickens himself couldn't have scripted a more disastrous downfall.
