Musicians Mixed on File Sharing Ruling

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court cast down a ruling against Grokster and Morpheus saying the way they were promoting their software was illegal, signaling the demise of these companies. They knowingly were advertising their software for the purpose of trading copyrighted files. Everyone from Don Henley, Sheryl Crow and Jay-Z were praising the ruling, but some musicians weren't quite so perky. Jeff Tweedy of Wilco stated "Any decision that outlaws or discourages developing technology that expands Wilco's reach is shortsighted. It is sad that conservatives and liberals in the Supreme Court can hold hands and agree unanimously on a decision so squarely on the side of big business and so damaging to the side of culture." Those in the indie music community echoed those sentiments saying closing these channels will severely hurt the distribution of music of independent artists.
