Stephen Lynch - Live at the El ReyGrade: B+ | Genre: Comedy Album
Summary: It's fair to say that this DVD isn't for weary ones too sensitive for Stephen Lynch's brand of wicked humor. It's just enough to rock your perfect little world but yet you're able to still sleep at night. Although, you do wonder how Lynch is able to.

The first time I heard of Stephen Lynch was when a local radio station played a track off his Superhero comedy album called "What if that guy from Smashing Pumpkins lost his car keys?" Though brief, those 30 seconds of a dead-on Billy Corgan impression almost caused myself to run off the side of the road from laughing so hard. Once I regained control and made it safely home, I Googled his name and came up with a comedy DVD called, Live at The El Rey. It's Lynch, with his guitar, playing to an audience unphased by Lynch's crude and twisted humor. Musical tales of self-pleasure and Jesus' brother, Craig, are hilarious bits of alarming humor. All are shocking evidence that Stephen Lynch is on his way to Hell, but at least Satan will have someone to lighten the mood.

Lynch is a comedian/songwriter with a choirboy voice and his Catholic school minister's lack of inhibitions. This is a guy that will not only talk about your mother but will also throw his own mother into the mix just to spice things up.

We are introduced to Stephen Lynch on the DVD just before a set in front of a live audience. A knock on his dressing room door reveals the singer with curious white residue all over his face. After cleaning himself up, he welcomes us into a world of wild parties and endless groupies...all of which are in his head. It's just him, his on stage partner, Teich, stale chips and a huge mound of the same curious white powder on a platter. The bit goes a bit long, but it's all worth the wait when Lynch finally makes his way onto the stage to sing quips that would make his dead rich grandfather roll over in his grave...all while he's enjoying the inheritance, about which he does sing.

Standouts on the DVD include "Talk to Me," a little ditty about being caught jerking himself over the john by his father. A little embarrassed of course by his dad's accidental discovery, Lynch pokes fun and sings, "there goes your grand kids down the toilet." Bashful is not Lynch's strong suit on bits about his "Special" friend Ed and dreams of becoming a superhero. Audience participation is strongly encouraged, and all oblige by suggesting their own ideas of what superheroes should be. I think I remember someone blurting out "Clamidia Girl!" at one point. Don't know what she'd protect me from but I surely wouldn't want to go up against her.

Thanks to his regular stage partner, Teich, Live at The El Rey keeps from getting too old too fast. The two play off each other incredibly well and keep the laughs fresh and continuous. It's fair to say that this DVD isn't for weary ones too sensitive for Stephen Lynch's brand of wicked humor. It's just enough to rock your perfect little world but yet you're able to still sleep at night. Although, you do wonder how Lynch is able to. Definitely check it out.
