The Ring TwoGrade: B+ | Genre: Horror
Summary: This is a sequel that doesn't fall flat like most. It's a genuine horror flick full of thrills and chills.

Rachel Keller (Watts) and her creepy kid, Aiden (Dorfman), have moved to Astoria, Oregon hoping to start over and to forget the ghost of an even creepier little girl, Samara (Chase/Stable), who caused so much death and destruction in their lives back in Seattle, WA. Rachel has settled for a low-key desk job as a newspaper editor, away from Seattle's faster paced headlines on which she used to report. This affords her time to focus more on being a better and more attentive mother to Aiden. They've moved into a quaint little neighborhood, got a new couch, and are content to live quiet and peaceful lives. However, Samara and her spine tingling video have also made their way to Astoria and can't be pushed away as easily as they were the first time.

"The Ring Two" begins with two teens, Jake and Emily, preparing to watch the infamous video. However, this isn't Jake's first time as he tries to transfer his weeklong curse to Emily, while fully aware that if he fails, his life will end in the two minutes that remain. Unlucky for him, Emily is too terrified and covers her eyes throughout, as time inevitably runs out on Jake.

The news makes its way to the small paper where Rachel works, and the details are an eerie reminder of what she left in Seattle. She investigates and discovers that this is no coincidence and that her old life is about to catch up with her new life. Samara has been looking for both mother and son and needs not look any further.

Desperate, Rachel breaks into Jake's deserted home so that she can retrieve the tape and destroy it. It does no good as we learn that Samara desires to cross over death's bridge by possessing Aiden's body and having Rachel as her mother.

Rachel must now dig deeper in order to uncover Samara's past to figure out exactly why she has returned and how to fend off this determined little girl.

This seems to be the year of the horror film. So many have already been released to theatres, and a handful more are on the way. Most are forgettable as soon as the credits roll. However, "The Ring Two" not only holds up well as a sequel, but also as a horror film in itself. It follows the sequel formula by staying true to the premise of the original, while adding dimensions to give the film more substance and depth.

Hideo Nakata, who also directed the two famous Japanese horror films, "Ringu" and "Ringu 2," is at the helm of "The Ring Two." Eventhough the original film was a remake of "Ringu," "The Ring Two" brings a new story line to the table and is a convincing follow-up to the 2002 box office hit. Watts and Dorfman are very effective though at times their performances are forced, which may have been necessary for certain "reveals" to be realized. It's full of jump out of your seat shockers and will consistently send chills throughout your body.

This is a sequel that doesn't fall flat like most and is sure to please. Admittedly, you're sure to find flaws, but the scares definitely make up for the short comings are well worth the rental.
