Grey's Anatomy - Season 2 Grade: B | Genre: Drama
Summary: The episode was a balancing act of the professional versus the personal lives of surgeons. It was a solid start to the new season and managed to wipe clean the stale cobwebs lingering from last season so our interns can start fresh.

After the sweltering summer break, ABC's smash new drama Grey's Anatomy returns to pickup our surgical interns embroiled in personal drama while trying to squeeze a little learning in. When we said good-bye last season, Christina (Sandra Oh) was pregnant as a result of afternoon quickies with Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) and heavily pondering abortion to save her medical dreams. O'Malley (T.R. Knight) socks the insufferable, pretty boy Alex (Justin Chambers) after indirectly contracting syphilis from him. Last but certainly not least, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) finds out that Dr. McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey), who she's been swapping bodily fluids with for months, is actually still married. Nothing can brighten your day like a smart surprise.

With all the hemorrhaging drama you can't help, but wonder if the new season is going to plummet into a pointless soap opera that sucks out that real human struggle that made it such a compelling drama last season. It certainly teetered on the brink this week, but nicely redeemed itself in the final moments. So Meredith officially checks into the 'men suck' hotel, saddling up to the bar across the street to knock back shot after shot. Girl is drinking like a sailor on leave as George and Christina join in on her pity party. Revelations escape like spirits as they jostle over whose life sucks the most. Christina shows relief at having shared her tremendous burden, but seems to think better of it the moment the personal glimpse escapes her lips. She's mum on who the father is. The bar owner, Joe, capsizes mid-serve, and the crew wheel him next door in preparation for a revolutionary standstill surgery where they have to kill him to bring him back to life. Only on TV.

Chief Resident Webber (James Pickens Jr.) is still recovering from getting a brain tumor plucked out and assigns temporary chief resident duties to Burke for his ability to keep Mr. happy in his pants unlike his competitor Dr. Shepard. Webber sends goofy George out to spy on all the interns and attendings to get a grip on what the hell is happening at his hospital, but George is too busy trying to find out a way to pay for Joe's surgery so he doesn't lose everything he's worked a lifetime for just to live. The drama jackknifes out of control. Derek's separated wife has been called in to oversee the surgery of a specialized pediatric procedure, and she selects Meredith to assist. Is she sizing up the competition, or just making life so awkward for Meredith that her head turns into a giant jiffy pop? Burke asks Christina out on an official "date" to which he gets the cold shoulder. He still doesn't know about the baby hanging in the balance. Dr. Model (Katherine Heigl) is starting to warm to obnoxious Alex as his hard, uncaring exterior melts when trying to save Joe. Can Hello Kitty save this emotionally deadened soul?

Meredith finds out about Christina's little tryst with Burke and can't believe she gave her all that crap for sleeping with her superior when she was doing the same thing. Burke finds out he got called up from the minors to be interim chief due to his feverous dedication to his work over personal matters which causes him to cut things short with Christina much to her surprise. Expect heavy reverberations from this one in the week's ahead. Derek's wifey finally sets the record straight to Meredith that she originally cheated on Derek with his best friend which was what caused him to flee to Seattle originally. Meredith finally allows Derek to relay his side of the truth, but it isn't enough for her to see past his initial betrayal. The episode wraps as it began with Meredith and Christina at the bar washing their troubles away in a river of alcohol.

The episode was a balancing act of the professional versus the personal lives of surgeons. Surgeons are very reasonable, cut and dry and kill every emotion before it can bubble to the surface for the good of their patients laid out on the operating table. What becomes of these careful, exacting doctors when the emotions toss them about in their uncontrollable whirlwind? This episode got so badly bogged down in the dramatic elements that it overshadowed the professional drama. The ending managed to wrap up some of these out of control tribulations and to put these personal struggles into a greater perspective with regards to their affect on their professional lives. It was a solid start to the new season of Grey's Anatomy and managed to wipe clean the stale cobwebs lingering from last season so our interns can start fresh.
