The Pussycat Dolls - PCDGrade: D- | Genre: Pop
Summary: You wouldn't pick up Playboy for the articles, right? So, why would pick up PCD for the music? Unless the CD comes packaged with a projection screen featuring the Pussycat stage act, stay away from this stinker and catch the live show instead.

I had to do it. Those Pussycat Dolls have taunted me long enough with their MTV music video lap dances that I had to give their debut PCD a listen. Laugh it up because once you see these girls wiggle their a**es, it's off to download city you'll go. Just as you would flip through the movie channels in search of highbrow fare only to stop at soft-core skin-emax romps, the Pussycat Dolls are your diversion from anything you would want to share with mom.

Debuting at Johnny Depp's Viper Room in 1995, the Pussycat Dolls have made a name for themselves as the sexiest burlesque inspired peep show this side of every man's wet dream. Led by Carmen Elektra, with routines created by famed choreographer, Robin Antin, these girls have teased and straddled their way into the trendiest live act to lure guest performers like Christina Applegate/Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, and Charlize Theron. In 2003, Antin decided to start from scratch by holding auditions for a new dance troupe of Pussycat Dolls that could ultimately become the hottest dance act since Britney Spears.

Don't mistake this for anything comparable to the live act. PCD is a marketing scam full of thumping beats with no-brainer lyrical spit. It's all about trying to create popstars out of a provocative stage act with hand picked hotties that are sure to attract all us dogs. Case in point, the new lead singer, Nicole Kea, was plucked from Eden's Crush, winner of the American Idol knock off, Pop Stars.

The current single, "Don't Cha" featuring Busta Rhymes is a constant nag that keeps going and going. It's everywhere you look as you ram your head against a brick wall just to get that chorus chant out of your system, "Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?" Ummm, I dunno...is she reading this?

It doesn't get much better from there as "Beep," with the Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am, and "Stickwitu" have you embarrassed that you've got these ditties coming through your speakers; the worst offenses being remakes of Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff" and Soft Cell's "Tainted Love". I guess if you can't do much with your own songs, why not try one that's worked in the past?

There is a small bit of redemption with the bluesy "Feelin' Good," or is it that it just feels good that this record is finally over? The tune's less poppy and more mature approach actually does help its effectiveness; however, coming last in the play list is too little too late.

PCD can't be listened to without an accompanying video for eye candy. You wouldn't pick up Playboy for the articles, right? So why would you pick up PCD for the music? Unless the CD comes packaged with a projection screen featuring the Pussycat stage act, stay away from this stinker and catch the live show instead.
