 | | Grade: A- | Genre: Comedy/Drama Summary: Boston Legal is one of the finest hours of television, and this week's episode did not disappoint. With this bunch of lawyers, you never know what to expect.
You can always count on Boston Legal for discussion topics around the water cooler at work. True to form, this week's episode, gave us just that. Let's take Alan (James Spader) for instance. Here is a man in definite need of some serious therapy. Last week, he was afraid of clowns, and although silly, not a totally unconceivable thought. I mean after Stephan King's It and Poltergeist, not to mention the mere fact that clowns hide their identities and wear those stupid red noses that make that awful squeaking noise, I can definitely understand why some people are afraid of clowns. But, I digress. |
This week, Alan revealed he has night terrors. Night terrors are a variation of sleepwalking that includes episodes of screaming or agitation in the middle of the night, generally seen in toddlers and preschoolers. This is simply ridiculous, a grown man with a condition normally seen in toddlers. These terrors cause him to get up and run out of his house because he thinks someone is chasing him. So, instead of therapy, Alan's solution was to offer his new secretary, who has money problems, a job sleeping with him. No, not like that, a job sleeping in the bed with him to prevent him from running outside and possibly killing himself. After making him sign a contract that there would be no touching, cuddling, or sex she accepted the job. I mean that's logical right? During her first shift nothing happened, but the second night, we see Alan have a night terror. He sat straight up in the bed, and appeared to look around; you have to remember he was still asleep. Then he jumped out of bed and ran for his balcony door. His secretary earned her pay by coaxing him back into bed. The next day she told Alan she had to quit her night job, but can you blame her? Chasing a grown man back to bed, so he doesn't kill or injury himself, is not my idea of a fun evening, either.

| Now let's move on to one of the newer partners, Denise (Julie Bowen). She had a case that involved a cosmetic plastic surgeon. The doctor's former nurse accused him of... wait brace yourself... using his own butt fat to perform procedures on his clients! Can you imagine, someone else's butt fat in your face? Eewww! How disgusting. The doctor revealed that the allegations were true and that he injected his own personal fat into over 30 women including, his lawyer Denise. Needless to say, she was furious, but she was still his lawyer so she decided the best course of action was to get the victims to settle out of court. They meet with two of his victims who are plastic surgery junkies and convinced them not to sue, in exchange for $300,000 each and an agreement for free plastic surgery for the rest of their lives. Of course, that's what you would do in that situation, come on, it was only a little butt fat. That 's a small price to pay for getting $300,000 and free plastic surgery for life. I might even take a little butt in the face for that.
Shirley (Candice Bergen), a managing partner, took a case where a young man is involved in a hit-and-run accident. The only eyewitness was a woman who has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Alzheimer's Disease. We could all see that Shirley was reluctant, to say the least, about interviewing this witness and cross-examining her. As an aside, Denny Crane (William Shatner), my favorite character, is afraid he has Alzheimer's, but instead of dealing with his feelings about this, he does a classic Denny Crane, deflecting maneuver. After Shirley has interviewed the woman, she doesn't want to be brutal on the stand and in response Denny says, "Since her brains are turning to oatmeal, let's put some raisins in it and have her for breakfast." That guy is hilarious. So, for that unforgettable comment, I give Denny the "Quote of the Day" Award. Now, back to the case, Shirley pulled it together for the trial and did her job, well. She actually got her client off by berating the old lady. While on the stand, the lady could not remember Shirley's name, although she told her three or four times during the cross-examination, nor could she remember how she got to the courtroom that day. Afterwards, we find a guilt ridden Shirley apologizing to the lady. Then, Shirley went to visit her father who also has Alzheimer's. She ended the show with a very revealing act; she began to read to her father from A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens "...It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity..." These few words spoke volumes about how she must have felt in that situation having to forcefully cross-examine a woman with the same debilitating disease as her father.
This week's episode involved all the humor, seriousness, and unforgettable characters that we have grown to love and expect from Boston Legal. This show gives you everything you need in a legal drama: Provocative cases, an admirable cast of characters, including the lovable "Denny Crane." I think Boston Legal is steadily gaining ground as one of the best legal dramas, to date.
