Glitchy Xbox 360s Fetch Top Dollar
Category: Misc
Posted by Mark Runyon | November 29, 2005 | 07:13 PM

The day following the release of the gaming behemoth, Xbox 360, these scarce systems were being bid up to $1000 on eBay. That's as much as a $700 markup over retail. I know its unthinkable, but it seems the Microsoft system is a little buggy. A poll on the forum of Teamxbox.com marks 14 to 16 percent of users having problems with their machines. Overheating issues seemed to be the chief complaint among users. Since they're sold out pretty much everywhere, ol' Softie will have a chance to exterminate the bugs before the next batch hits shelves.

Desperate HousewivesGrade: A | Genre: Drama
Summary: Desperate Housewives does it again. This latest installment reveals just enough information and introduces the right new situations to keep its hooks in you. There is no way you can stop watching now.

While reflecting on the state of mankind, Dr. Jekyll said, "All human beings... are commingled out of good and evil." This statement, made by Dr. Jekyll in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, has never been truer than in Sunday's episode of Desperate Housewives. With all of George's skeletons out of the closet, Lynette's impulsive retaliations, Susan's father's ornery disposition, and Carlos's not-so-holy nun, you can see that evil is alive and can be found in some very unexpected places.

John Mayer Trio - Try! Live in Concert

PM Rating System

John Mayer Trio - Try!Grade: A- | Genre: Blues/Soul/Rock
Summary: While Try! isn't the perfect disk, it is one juiced with daring, flinging the doors of possibility open for John and his fellow troubadours.

Its really nice to see a talented musician reach the point where he can bust out of the chains the music machine has wrapped him in to become what he was truly meant to be. It's not easy to give your carefully buffed, Grammy winning, multi-platinum image the finger to begin charting a new destination. That is effectively what John Mayer has done in forming the John Mayer Trio. He's letting his inner soul brother hog the mic. He's feelin' the blues right through to the tips of his hair. Anyone who has seen him in concert could sense the winds of change were coming. There are those defining moments where he just trails off in a song like "Neon" and, with the audience about to rip the roof off the auditorium, he shares this quiet space with his guitar where everything else is simply the static of life. That's John at his purest and for the first time, with Try!, I think we are afforded an unfiltered look into the musician's soul. It's not the slick pop tart Mayer we've come to know, but the man at his most honest.

DFA Holiday Mix 2005Grade: A- | Genre: Dance
Summary: The DFA has been the only dance label I've listened to regularly the last couple years. A mix of every single they've put out this year is perfect. It's like they read my mind.

The DFA has been making quite a name for themselves recently. They've been putting records out for a while now, but most of the world received their introduction when Echoes by The Rapture came out in 2003. That record was amazing enough to ensure that I would be paying close attention to whatever the label put out for quite a while. Turns out that was a good idea. I've gotten to enjoy LPs from LCD Soundsystem, The Juan Maclean (kind of enjoy one from Black Dice), and have my mind blown by the sprawling DFA Compilation #2. This excellent 50-minute dance mix compiled by Tim Sweeney and Tim Goldsworthy is the natural next step; it rocks hard, and if you actually want to do some dancing, it's got you covered.

Rome: Series Finale

PM Rating System

Rome: Season 1 FinaleGrade: B+ | Genre: Drama
Summary: Rome is a highly delectable treat. The acting is top rate all around as we would expect for an HBO/BBC feature drama. The costume and set design have spared no expense, looking like they are the result of some mega-million dollar Hollywood blockbuster. The story is full and the suspense is executed with delicate grace.

Ever since Six Feet Under sadly dug its plot in the bone yard last August, I've been wondering what cutting edge programming HBO was going to rest in its place. The answer came in the form of two new series: Extras and Rome. Extras is the new dry comedy from the politically incorrect, Brit genius Rick Gervais (BBC's The Office). The series follows around a pair of extras on the set for a couple of days as their megalomaniac Hollywood stars, playing twisted versions of themselves, spin low-key hilarity. On the opposite end of the television spectrum, Rome is the lavish historical drama that spies on Caesar and his cohorts as they rule the dawn of enlightenment. After heavy procrastination all season, I've decided to duck in on the last act to see if Rome has the goods to be the greatest thing since Gladiator, or if its more akin to a pale one act Shakespeare play given by the local junior college.

The band recently released To The Pain (Bieler Bros. Records), their fourth major studio album, which has been selling marginally well in its first couple of weeks. This also included roughly 800 CDs being donated towards hurricane victims in a Fort Myers benefit show.

Beginning appropriately with the sounds of war, the Spanish influenced band rocketed into "There's Gonna Be a War" which began a solid setlist filled with fast moving rockers, most off of the band's recent album "To The Pain."

Chris Tucker's Gold Mine

Chris Tucker, the most over paid actor in America, finally agrees to return to the franchise that made his career and set him up for life, Rush Hour. The third installment will deliver to Tucker $20 million against 20% of the film's gross. Considering he has only made two movies since 1998, Rush Hour and Rush Hour 2, that's a quite a hefty pay day for a guy who lately has only made appearances in music videos for Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey. Whatever he's doing, he's doing it right. Can't argue with that.

Ladytron - Witching HourGrade: C | Genre: Electro Pop
Summary: At the end of the day, Witching Hour leaves me at a bit of a loss. Does Ladytron want to be known for dreamy atmospheric compositions a la Cocteau Twins, or do they want to spark the incendiary trance beats, burning up the dance floor?

The Liverpool-based Ladytron have returned with their electronic fuzz of futuristic impulse on Witching Hour. Hour marks the bands third LP as they continue to settle into their sound and define why Ladytron's spacey dose of haze should make the fickle listening public perk up and take notice. They seem to have pinned down the niche, adding flavor to synth beats and beautifully stilted vocals. Will it ever propel them into mass stardom, securing their own spotlight? Probably not, but Witching Hour does help the group to evolve, fleshing out new dimensions for additional exploration.

Same !@#$ Different Day - Lyrics BornGrade: C+ | Genre: Hip Hop
Summary: Remix albums typically suck all kinds of ways. If you like the original album, it usually kills the good groove. But when your remixers are DJ Shadow, Chief Xcel, Dan the Automator and the like, you might just end up with something that feels pretty good.

I noticed that I've been going on a kind of Quannum Projects run with my last several reviews (read: two) and decided to keep it going. Same !@#$ Different Day isn't particularly new (April) and the source material is even less new. See, it's a remix album based on Lyrics Born's first album, Later That Day..., which dropped late 2003. It got mixed reviews, and the consensus was that Lyrics Born was strong enough to do a better job. Same !@#$ Different Day (by the way that's the real title I'm not censoring myself) is a better job. His raps are the same, but the production and beats are nice and tight this time around. However, it still feels like the same ol' !@#$. That's not to say that it sounds like that crap on the radio box, but after a couple of listens the album sounds quite a bit less special than it did when you first threw it on. The rhymes are still there though, and the production is tight, they just don't hold up.

Mysterious SkinGrade: B+ | Genre: Independent
Summary: Mysterious Skin is a rough film to take in and process, but just like enduring the pain of a marathon you get a strange sense of satisfaction from starring into the void of these lives to pull out the people buried inside.

The human mind is a complex bundle of neurons and synapses spastically firing away, serving as the air traffic control tower for the mess of complexity that is the human body. What happens when you take this finely tuned instrument and force it to digest images and actions no human was ever meant to experience? Does it reach its breaking point and simply sputter to a halt? Does it revolt, cutting into the fundamentals of personality and its own self-preservation instinct? How do you unbreak the egg and return the yolk to its shell? Gregg Araki's Mysterious Skin explores this topic with savage brutality and careful grace. This cross current of contradictions are what make Skin such a compelling portrait to behold.

Crowe Flies the Coop

Sentencing of Russell Crowe for his phone tossing ways further solidifies the fact that there are actually two judicial systems operating in America: one for celebrities and one for the rest of us. Crowe was originally charged with second-degree assault, a felony which could have put his acting career behind bars for seven years and jeopardized his visa status. Instead, he worked a deal for a third degree charge, with the possibility of one year jail time, which was reduced to time served -- one night. His status in America still seems in jeopardy since the INS for some reason frowns upon criminal activity. After all is said and done, I think the immigration official will slide in Gladiator and think, "we pay millions of dollars a year to see him beat the crap out of someone. How can we deport him for one lousy phone?"

You can always count on Boston Legal for discussion topics around the water cooler at work. True to form, this week's episode, gave us just that. Let's take Alan (James Spader) for instance. Here is a man in definite need of some serious therapy. Last week, he was afraid of clowns, and although silly, not a totally unconceivable thought. I mean after Stephan King's It and Poltergeist, not to mention the mere fact that clowns hide their identities and wear those stupid red noses that make that awful squeaking noise, I can definitely understand why some people are afraid of clowns. PalindromesGrade: B | Genre: Independent
Summary: This film, like all of Todd Solondz' films, is filled with cynicism, absurdity, human despair, bad clothes, and biting humor. It may not be his masterpiece, but it's a meaty, satisfying chunk of celluloid from one the current Master Chefs of the cinema.

Todd Solondz has enjoyed some notoriety over the years as a director who delights in revealing middle class America, warts and all to an unsuspecting public. Palindromes, his latest trek into dangerous waters is certainly filled with moments that will leave you aghast or choking on your popcorn, but it is hardly his best work.

As somewhat of an extension of his 1995 cult classic, Welcome To The Dollhouse, Palindromes shares that films adolescent theme of growing up in a world full of unfairness, cruelty and bizarre circumstances. On the other hand, Palindromes is nothing like Dawn Wiener's tale of teenage travails. It may start off with her untimely funeral, but from there, the story veers off into the unknown.

Double Features for the Post-Summer Drought

Every savvy movie buff knows that summers and even the months following it are the proverbial dumping ground for blockbusters deemed "highly entertaining," leaving us to shell out $8.50 for a film high on the big-name gloss factor, but short on substance. And while a film doesn't have to be "important" to be entertaining, this time is the gulag, the wasteland, before the oscar-worthy juggernauts are released. Where to go but to our trusty Netflix or video store to catch up on those forgotten favorites that deserve a second viewing.

But instead of getting the newest release of the next biggest sequel to the last biggest sequel, why not experiment with the perfect double-feature that is not as obvious as sequels? Here is a short guide of strongly recommended rentals to make a double-feature to die for. Each movie below stands on its own as a great flick, but for something different, try watching the two back-to-back.

Criminal MindsGrade: B- | Genre: Crime Drama
Summary: Trying to follow in the footsteps of movies like Silence of the Lambs, the new CBS television drama Criminal Minds follows a team of FBI agents as they create profiles, using them to catch criminals. Though at times it is reminiscent of other TV dramas, it still has lots of potential.

With a name like Criminal Minds, I was definitely intrigued. With all the puzzle-like drama shows that I am addicted to, I thought, why not take a gander at Criminal Minds. After I saw the 1991 hit Silence of the Lambs, I was hooked on anything having to do with the mind of serial killers. Based on the Thomas Harris novel of the same name, the film centers on rookie Detective Clarice Starling of the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit (BSU) quest to stop a serial killer by tapping into the mind of the nefarious Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Trying to follow in those footsteps is the CBS television drama Criminal Minds. Criminal Minds follows a team of BSU agents as they create profiles and trap the unlawful. My expectations were to get a glimpse of the inner workings of some very dubious characters, as well as the methods agents use to catch such characters. A lot of my expectations were met, but others fell short.

Sevendust - Next Grade: B+ | Genre: Hard Rock/Metal
Summary: Through all the troubles they've had recently, Sevendust has come through and made a great album that only has a few problems that can easily be remedied in the future.

After the decidedly riff-free and depressing Seasons failed to make an impact with rock fans, metal heroes Sevendust were at a loss. With label TVT wanting them to make a radio-friendly album and subsequently showing no support, plus guitarist Clint Lowery leaving the band to create Dark new Day with old friends, the future looked bleak for the Atlanta-based metal band.

Instead of giving in, they recruited their old friend Sonny Mayo (formerly of Snot), changed labels (Universal-owned Winedark), took some of the lessons they learned from Seasons and incorporated their more traditional breakdowns and chainsaw-sounding riffs to make the appropriately titled Next.

Category: Film News
Posted by Mark Runyon | November 15, 2005 | 12:50 PM

Fans of Katie Holmes have a new reason to grumble about her relationship with Tom Cruise. The 26-year-old rising actress is reportedly giving up acting for good to be a stay at home mom. A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: 'Katie has decided to give up acting altogether. She's been telling friends that she and Tom have decided it is best she stays at home and brings up their baby.' This follows rumors earlier this month that she wouldn't be tying the knot until Tom signed a pre-nup guaranteeing her millions if the marriage dissolves before 5 years.

Grade: D- | Genre: Comedy
Summary: Curiosity alone will probably force you to halt your mindless channel flipping to ogle the sexy Pamela Anderson. Just as you learned with Barb Wire and your brilliant plan to eat a box of Twinkies for dinner in high school, simply because it fills the space doesn't mean you can escape feeling all empty inside afterwards.

So have you ever wondered what a show would look like that focused solely on a pair of breasts? Ladies, that was largely a guy question in case you were caught in the crossfire. Well wonder no more because Stacked is exactly that, and Pamela Anderson has been gracious enough to contribute her global endowments to this worthy cause. It's not going to spark an end to world hunger or anything, but we all have to do our part to make the world a better place. So Stacked follows around Pamela's breasts, and various other sensual body parts, in a Barnes and Noble-type joint filled with dweeby book employees, letting the hilarity try to be contained like Pamela's bra puckering at the seams. I mean Pamela Anderson and walls upon walls of books go together as naturally as peanut butter slathered on jelly. Why hasn't someone slapped this ingenious mix together before? All horribly veiled sarcasm aside, Stacked makes for incredibly dull television. The laughs are empty, the sitcom formulaic, and the heaving ex-Boobwatch beauty is starting to lose a bit of spin on her serve with the escape of years.

General Elektriks - Cliquety Kliqk Grade: A- | Genre: Electronic
Summary: Nobody likes lounge music. But when you add some keyboard work that totally doesn't make you gag and some wonderful hip-hop beats, you've got solid gold. It's something that isn't anything like lounge music.

When I think of French music, the only things that come to mind are that little "Muffin Man" song (which is in no way related to France) and the accordion. These two stupid little mental associations will forever be overshadowed by General Elektriks. Things you should know about General Elektriks:

* It's a one-man band. Herve Salters is some kind of crazy keyboard genius that has performed for Blackalicious, Maroons, Femi Kuti, etc.
* It's a Quannum Project. Jackpot!
* French people are awesome.

Jailbird Martha Stewart is finding freedom to be a slippery ratings slope leading to cancellation. Martha's Apprentice will finish out its season on NBC, but the studio has said it will not order another round of episodes. After the intense interest in Donald's Apprentice, a spin-off seemed inevitable. The spark just wasn't there, only drawing an average of 6.8 million viewers. The show's two-hour finale is set for December 21.

Interview with Dark new Day part 2

Posted by Chuck Thomas | November 13, 2005 | 06:58 PM

Chuck Thomas: Describe the band for anyone out there that hasn't heard of you.

Will Hunt: Basically we've known each other for 12 years or so, and we all grew up in rival bands or in bands together back then. We always ran into each other, and if you came to each guy and said, "Hey, if you can put your own band together outside of your current band, who would you grab?" We were the guys that always said that we'd like to play with that guy, I'd like to play with Brett, or with Troy, all of them. The stars just kind of aligned, we all got involved with other things, and finally those things dissipated. We all had other record deals. Then we started this band. Things just happened in that order. We never did demos or anything like that, we just started off and recorded our record. We tracked eighteen songs for it and it's what you have now in Twelve Year Silence.

What is a winning formula for a band?

If you're Dark new Day, you get five best friends, split up into other bands such as Sevendust and Creed, work the industry for twelve years, then one day all quit your bands simultaneously and form the dream band you've always wanted.

"If you came to each guy and said, 'Hey, if you can put your own band together outside of your current band, who would you grab,' we were the guys that always said that we'd like to play with that guy," said drummer Will Hunt [formerly drummer of metal band Skrape] before their recent show in Atlanta. "I'd like to play with Brett, or with Troy, all of them. The stars just kind of aligned, we all got involved with other things, and finally those things dissipated. We all had other record deals. Then we started this band. Things just happened in that order."

Me and You and Everyone We Know Grade: A | Genre: Independent
Summary: Definitely not for the multiplex crowd, Me and You... will delight those who look for something a little different and something that will make them think as well.

Miranda July not only wrote and directed this oddly moving film but stars as the wannabe performance artist at its core. Centered on a handful of everyday people, their friends and acquaintances, Me and You and Everyone We Know looks at the nature of innocence in our contemporary society.

A divorced shoe salesman, Richard (John Hawkes) encounters Christine (July) as he struggles to raise his two young sons. Unlike anyone he has ever encountered, Christine's penchant for turning every moment and every experience of her life into an artistic statement first charms and then repels Richard.

Fans have been cringing for this announcement for a while, but Fox has finally decided to ax the critically acclaimed, ratings challenged comedy. After a long hiatus due to baseball playoff coverage, its one-two punch last week brought in a meager 4 million viewers. Fox will take Arrested and Kitchen Confidential off the schedule for the next three weeks for November sweeps, replacing them with reruns of Prison Break. The quality of television took a hefty blow on that announcement.

If it wasn't bad enough that Sony is keeping you from cutting the disk you bought over to your iPod, now their copy-protection program, that automatically installs when certain BMG or Sony disks are played on personal computers, have become a harbor for viruses. Anti-virus companies have identified 3 Trojan horse programs that are burrowing away in Sony's XCP2 technology. These programs, that hold little difference from spyware, are opening the company up to a lot of legal headaches from installing unauthorized programs on user's machines.

Lost: Death of a Survivor Grade: B | Genre: Drama
Summary: After starting the new season off with a whimper, they genuinely seem to be getting back to the explosive plot twists, socking us with the unthinkable developments, to sink the hooks of addiction ever deeper.

It's been three painstaking weeks since Lost left us stranded in the television ether. Of course in true Lost fashion, they had to leave us salivating with a doozy of a plot hangnail -- the death of one of our castaways is imminent. Will it be Sawyer (Josh Holloway) whose rancid arm seems sure to spirit his grumpy ass off the isle any second? Will it be one of the ever-dwindling number of south side survivors of Flight 815? Or will it be some random guy who goes out for a morning swim and gets caught up in the undertow? Blub, blub, blub. The possibilities for death in this place are endless. For the time being, we'll stick with what we do know. The character we're asked to focus our attention on is none other than the sizzling college coed Shannon (Maggie Grace). It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it.

Nip/Tuck's resident bad boy, Julian McMahon, is putting aside the ultra-suave Christian Troy to take on a starring role across from Sandra Bullock in the upcoming thriller Premonition. The premise of the story is about a housewife whose husband is involved in a fatal car accident, yet he's shedding his body bag the next day. It will begin shooting in January in Louisiana with German filmmaker Mennan Yapo. Let's hope for a higher grade film than McMahon's last exercise in mediocrity Fantastic Four.

PM Rating System

The Boondocks Grade: B+ | Genre: Animation
Summary: The Boondocks may be a tough dose to swallow, as it is certain to offend many with its borderline abrasive approach, but its biting wit and underlying message make it a compelling watch.

The opening 30-seconds of the Boondocks, the newest addition to Cartoon Network's Adult Swim Sunday night line-up, tells you everything you need to know. You see this group of white people rioting, just tearing each other apart. Huey, a young African American teenager, is rudely awakened by his grandfather piping the words, "Umm Hmm. You were having that dream where you make the white people riot, weren't you?" Black Power my brother. If you're not offended, you're not paying attention. The Boondocks has leapt off the funny pages in slick style. The top-notch animation is in da house, the severely politically incorrect jabs are fully representin' and the culture shock is off da hook. In case you were wondering, yes I very well could be the whitest person on the face of the earth.

The West Wing: Who Won the Debate?

The West WingThe West Wing Grade: B | Genre: Drama
Summary: The live debate on the West Wing proved that politics are wasted on the politicians. Smits and Alda were lively sparring partners, attempting to seal the deal on their fake presidency.

On the way into work this morning, I spied a bumper sticker campaigning the Santos/McGarry ticket for the White House in '06. After watching the debate last night on the West Wing, I think either candidate would be preferable to the choices we had during the real Presidential election this time last November. Maybe we should let the cast of the West Wing run the country? I mean do you really think they could do much worse than the team of monkeys pulling the switches in the current administration. Hey, desperate times spur the call for radical solutions. Last night marked an interesting spin on the faux election unfolding on the West Wing. They broadcasted the debates live to give the show an air of spontaneity, similar to the real deal. I have to say that was a debate. It was a heated and spirited exchange by the candidates: Texas Democrat Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits) and California Republican Arnold Vinick (Alan Alda). So the question eating away at everyone, the day following the mutual tongue lashing, is who won the debate? Here is the blow-by-blow analysis of the verbal jousting.

BBC's Coupling: The Answer to Life Without Seinfeld & Friends
Category: PM Television Commentary
Posted by Mark Runyon | November 04, 2005 | 06:39 PM

Coupling'Iconish' (as Jessica Simpson would say) television comedy just hasn't been the same since the fall of the mighty NBC "must-see" line-up that let our remotes rest on Thursday nights. Did they truly think the Joanie Loves Chachi-esque Joey could really anchor their continued dominance? Don't even get me started on NBC ditching its best comedy, Scrubs, from their fall line-up. What are we to do without our Friends or the immortal Seinfeld to keep us wobbling off the couch from fits of sidesplitting laughter? Oh, the humanity! What would you do if I told you there was a show just as fun as Friends with that special quirky innovation of Seinfeld all wrapped up into one nice, neat little package? Now granted it's cancelled too, but it's British, available on DVD, so it's all new to you. It's called Coupling and it's just the swift kick-start your funny bone has been jonesing for.

Lindsay Lohan Goes Indie
Category: Actor Profiles
Posted by Mark Runyon | November 04, 2005 | 12:51 PM

Up until now, Lindsay Lohan has been better known for her solid work in forgettable teen movies. That is all about to change as Lohan declares her independence. This week she signed on to Bobby, a low-budget Emilio Estavez flick profiling the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. Now she is said to have committed to Chapter 27, starring across from her newly rumored boyfriend Jared Leto. The film focuses on the murder of John Lennon. All this indie credibility may be for naught if she continues to bludgeon us with bad pop melodies on her sophomore album A Little More Personal coming December 6th. Bobby is slated to begin filming next week with Chapter 27 starting early next year.

Blackalicious - The Craft

PM Rating System

Blackalicious - The Craft Grade: B | Genre: Hip-Hop
Summary: On Blackalicious' new album, they manage to kick every ass in the rap game but their own. The Craft is better than most rap mucking about right now, but Blazing Arrow is a pretty tough act to follow.

Blackalicious totally dominate. Everybody knows it. Gift of Gab has such an insane flow that he sounds like a rhyming auctioneer, and Chief Xcel makes such incredible beats that everybody else should just quit. But hip hop heads expect this. Blackalicious have been proving for years that they're the bomb, and that spoils people. Plenty of musicians have faced the same dilemma: you make an amazing album (or two, in Blackalicious' case) and then people expect something better. This doesnnt mean The Craft is a sophomore slump (Blackalicious have been in the game too long for this); it's better than anything most artists could hope to produce. It just isn't as astoundingly good as the last couple albums.

A Fresh Look at 'Singles'
Category: Did You Know
Posted by Mark Runyon | November 02, 2005 | 01:06 PM

So Elizabethtown wasn't exactly all that. Time to queue up Singles again and revel in classic Crowe. Take another look at the film through these eyes:

> Nirvana was actually supposed to contribute to the soundtrack, but backed out at the last minute. An alternate title for the film was Come As You Are.
> Chris Cornell actually took two of the dummy track names off the Citizen Dick setlist and recorded songs from them ("Seasons" and Soundgarden's "Spoonman").
> Did you catch Eric Stolz as the mime? How about Tim Burton as the video date director? What about Sideways star Paul Giamatti as an extra?
> Contrary to popular belief, Singles was never meant to capitalize on the growing Seattle sound since filming was well underway when grunge was born. The film actually started production in 1984 yet kept getting delayed.
