Do You Want Chips with That? J-Lo, Hubbie to Star in Salsa Movie.
By: Moviefaire | Category: Film News | 12/08/05 | 01:38 PM

Jennifer Lopez, will star with her husband, Marc Anthony, in a music-based flick focusing on the life of late salsa king, Puerto Rican singer Hector Lavoe. The film entitled, El Cantante, or The Singer, has started filming in New York with additional shooting also planned for Puerto Rico. Release for this J-Lo produced, hubbie/wife feature is scheduled for sometime next year.

The most important concern for moviegoers is that, while we know Marc Anthony can and will sing, J-Lo might try to go for a duet with him. I urge caution if this is reported to take place in this movie. (Sorry to mention this, but remember their Oscar duet a while ago?)

Anthony will portray Lavoe, and naturally, Ms. Lopez has herself will playing his wife, Puchi. Director, Leon Icahaso of "Pineiro" is at the helm. Ruben Blades wrote the title song, "El Cantante" popularized by Lavoe in the 1970s. Lavoe became one of the great voices of salsa in the New York music scene, at the height of the genre's popularity. Lavoe at the beginning recorded with Willie Colon, a great Latin American composer, trombonist, and bandleader, and then, as lead singers do, Lavoe later went solo. His long list of hits also includes "El Periodico de Ayer" and "Calle Luna, Calle Sol," recorded with Colon.

In the 1980s, as salsa's popularity declined, Lavoe saw his health slide and, suffering from drug and alcohol problems, attempted suicide by jumping from a 10-story building and amazingly enough he survived. He died in 1993. One wonders if life will not imitate art here, and Marc Anthony at some point will find himself in a similar situation due to his attachment to serial bride, Lopez. Will Anthony and his career survive J-Lo?
