Is Naomi Watts a Bond Girl?
Category: Film News
Posted by Mark Runyon | December 31, 2005 | 01:38 AM

Reports are surfacing that, following her head turning role as Ann Darrow in King Kong, Naomi Watts has been offered the role of Russian vixen Vesper Lynd in the upcoming Bond flick Casino Royale. Don't go Photoshoping pix of her and Daniel Craig together just yet. Friends say Watts may decline the role for fear of typecasting which has derailed many a promising career. Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron have already been offered the part, and subsequently turned it down.

Ryan Adams - 29

Ryan Adams - 29Grade: B | Genre: Alt-Country
Summary: 29 isn't Ryan's best, due to the toll the darker moments take on the collection as a whole. There are certainly a handful of flirtations with greatness that make this disk a must for any fan of his work.

Ryan Adams is such a beautifully complex songwriter. Most artists consider it a crowning achievement to get one album out the studio door in a year. Mr. Adams' 29 marks his third release for 2005 and actually, should you count the 2-disk set Cold Roses as two separate entries, you could easily say he's got four notches in his belt for 05. How is that even possible? I know an artist usually writes 40+ songs for an album that get whittled down to the dozen or so finished tracks. So either Ryan is writing a song-a-day or maybe he's just not letting any dogs hit the studio floor. Given the high quality of each release, I'd have a hard time believing that he's just releasing everything including his lullabies to his kitchen sink. I think the truth lies somewhere in between. I think we are looking at one of the most prolific songwriters of the age. One not hindered by the confines of a single genre. He's someone who doesn't mind selling GAP jeans if it means he can jam out with Willie Nelson. He's an artist who'd be playing in the subway station, sleeping on the filthy floors, if it meant he could have an audience for his music. Welcome to Ryan Adams at 29.

Kevin Federline Prepares Us for 'The Truth'

Let the betting begin on how bad Kevin Federline's (or Mr. Britney Spears as he's known to most) rap album is going to bomb in the new year. Anticipating the fan frenzy, Federline has made a web site so his one hysterical fan can pop in and read the musing of a professional boy toy. The site starts with a flash presentation of the Spear's family tabloid exploits, then carries you over to his content rich site containing not much, even less and pretty much zilch. Just wait until Britney wakes up and drops his mooching ass. This sucker is going to be in the bargain bin faster than you can say "Ice Ice Baby." Don't worry Kevin. We're saving room for you on the Surreal Life.

Must Love DogsGrade: C+ | Genre: Romantic Comedy
Summary: While Must Love Dogs doesn't really cover any new ground or give us the Hollywood couple we wish we could see canoodling on the tabloids, it is a mildly enjoyable comedy that employs quick wit and clever dating situations.

In life, even us guys have to take on the occasional chick flick. Sometimes you can chalk it up as a favor for a girlfriend, or perhaps your favorite actor tries on his sensitive side. You can't automatically relegate this entire genre to the film scrap heap. There are more than a few brilliantly made "chick flicks" that nail male/female interactions in very clever and enjoyable ways. Just take a look at When Harry Met Sally or more serious fare like The English Patient. The problem is you have all these other brainless features, drowning in cliches and warping reality with the obligatory happy ending. Just like their male counterparts -- the testosterone fueled action flick -- these Hollywood formula romances give the whole genre a bad name. Now we have the aging hottie Diane Lane and the perpetual everyman John Cusack striving to convincingly be the newest adorable couple in Must Love Dogs. Though we get the occasional witty banter and likable co-stars, it fares little better than an average romantic comedy, hoping to speak to singles everywhere about the new quirks that come packaged with Internet dating.

Johnny Cash - The Legend of Johnny CashGrade: A | Genre: Country/Rock/Blues
Summary: The Legend of Johnny Cash is a the perfect introduction to an American icon. It seems a shame that he had to travel to the great beyond before many of us cleaned out our ears to hear this sweet music.

It's been two years since we marked the passing of one of music's true legends, Mr. Johnny Cash. With his signature head-to-toe black garb and the deep vocal stamp he planted on his songs, he created an unmistakable presence that won't be matched. His passing has stirred up a string of compilations and the fabulous biopic Walk the Line starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. If you haven't had the extreme pleasure, be sure to catch one of this year's best films. As ashamed as I am to admit it, in his living years Cash was never more than a name to me. He was a larger than life persona, and I had my foolish preconceived notions of what he was -- country. To peg him in that tired old genre is like saying Moby makes dance music because of a single you once heard on the radio. Both artists are so much more than the convenient categories we try to file them away in. One of the year's best compilations is The Legend of Johnny Cash. It is a sharp collection that captures the heart and spirit of a man who gave so much to music.

Nip/Tuck: Season 3 FinaleGrade: B- | Genre: Drama
Summary: So the season closer unveiled our masked stalker with little surprise. I thought the clever writers of Tuck would throw us a last minute curve ball to serve up another juicy cutter.

For a season plus, the Carver has stalked the beauty enhanced women of Miami on the FX drama Nip/Tuck. With the end of season 3 finally bringing itself to a close with its two-hour shebang, it is time to unmask the creator of grotesque smiley faces. With every character in the Nip/Tuck universe missing enough screws to open a Home Depot, the possibilities are endless. Will it be the fuming femanazi Liz? Has Matt's shuffling father figures and newfound white supremacist ways pushed him to cut? Maybe, Bobolit survived the do-it-yourself facial transplant surgery and is exacting revenge on Kimber and Christian. Of course, what discussion of the Carver would be complete without everybody's favorite bi surgeon from Hot-lanta Quentin? It's time to unmask every psychologists dream patient and end one of television's hottest mysteries.

John Mayer @ EddieGrade: A+ | Genre: Acoustic
Summary: I'd be hard pressed to say I've seen an artist be more honest or heartfelt during a performance. John came into this evening with no strings attached, playing with all the love and passion of a starving artist. I have no qualms saying that this was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Date: December 20, 2005
Location: Decatur, GA
Every once in a while, a show pops up on the concert calendar that you know is going to be great long before you ever walk through the door. Maybe its an artist who rarely tours that you've waited for years to see, or perhaps you happen to capture a meteor seconds before it explodes all over radio and the national music conscious. Seeing John Mayer back in the listening room at Eddie's Attic, where he got his start, is one of those shows. I can remember the first time a friend clued me in to Mayer. I went on Napster (in the good old days before the terms illegal and RIAA ran rampant) and downloaded about 20 live tracks of selections from Inside Wants Out as well as numbers that would become the uber sensation Room for Squares. "Why Georgia" was the first song I heard, and I just remember becoming incredibly giddy like I'd just unearthed the Ark of the Covenant. Musically speaking, I had. There was a purity in his voice, mixed with a clarity in his songwriting, that was so refreshing to hear. Unfortunately, he'd just grown to the level that he was too big a fish to be playing Eddie's anymore so I had to settle for seeing him open for Guster for my first concert experience. I'd always wondered what it would be like for him to return home again and give his Atlanta fans a taste of the days before bodies were wonderlands, when he couldn't yet conceive what it would feel like to be bigger than his body.

We're hitting the home stretch on the holiday season so in the entertainment world that means we're getting hit with a flood of Oscar contenders and everybody whose got something to say about music is whipping out their best of 2005 lists (look for PM Media's next weekend). Spin has weighed in on the year that was anointing the Killers as the Band of the Year, Arcade Fire as Breakout Band of the Year and the London rapper, by way of Sri Lanka, M.I.A. as Artist of the Year. Kayne West's Late Registration took top honors as album of the year with other notable entries including Franz' You Could Have It So Much Better (3), The New Pornographers Twin Cinema (7) and Fiona Apple Extraordinary Machine (9). Its an interesting issue of the year that was covering everything from Jessica Simpson's butt implants, "Feel Good Inc." as the single of the year, and did you realize Frances Bean was 12? Twelve years of Courtney screwing an impressionable mind.

'Big Love' Brings Polygamy to HBO
Category: Television News
Posted by Mark Runyon | December 20, 2005 | 10:20 AM

And you thought a television series focused on a family of undertakers was weird. HBO is gearing up to bring us the Tom Hanks produced drama Big Love about a polygamist family in Utah. Bill Paxton will play Bill Henrickson, a home-improvement businessman juggling three wives: Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevingny and Ginnfer Goodwin. Bill's a Viagra popping fool, getting his daily dose as he works through the batting order each night. The series is said to avoid the sizable ick factor and instead focus on just how their day-to-day lives would work. Though on first glance they appear to be Mormons, the Henrickson family is actually an unlabeled offshoot of the religion. The Mormon Church abandoned the practice of polygamy among its members in 1890.

Diana Krall - Christmas SongsGrade: B+ | Genre: Holday/Vocal Jazz
Summary: Diana Krall fulfills her tremendous promise that jazz aficionados have sensed was simmering in her for many moons. She's given us reason to get giddy about Christmas music again.

It was the week before Thanksgiving, and I was at the local outlet mall looking to beat the Christmas shopping madness. Though I managed to escape the feeding frenzy, there is no escaping the Christmas music. They already had it going strong in every store I ducked into as if there were hypnotic suggestions woven into the lyrics to assist us in loosening our wallets. Now I don't have a problem with Christmas music on the whole. Nat King Cole, Harry Connick, Alvin & the Chipmunks are artists clearly meant to accent the season. My issue is that you have a couple hundred songs getting played over and over and over again like some demented Santa's top 40. I still wake up in cold sweats trying to escape the hour loop of modern Christmas tunes, needled into me from doing an ill-advised stint at the GAP one holiday season. So though Christmas music should be avoided like the plague, there are a handful of "must have" disks to tone down the chaos of family dinners, serenade present opening, or perhaps be the seduction mix of your role-playing as Santa and the bad elf.

Ten Sexiest Women of Television
Category: PM Television Commentary
Posted by Mark Runyon | December 18, 2005 | 12:00 AM

Several months ago, I wrote a feature showcasing the sexiest women in film. It was a piece that generated much praise, an array of curse words that were new to me, but more than anything, it triggered an outpouring of fierce debate over who made the list, who didn't and whose legs out sexed who. I promised I'd return to highlight the stunning ladies of music and television when the time was right, so today I park myself on the sofa, flipper in hand, to give the scintillating beauties of the small screen their just due. So before we get to the list that sparks girlfriends into a jealous rage, its time to lay the ground rules and highlight the criteria used for selecting this esteemed field. First, the actress must be currently on the active roster for their respective series. That's why you don't have no-brainers of the past like Jessica Alba, Elisha Cuthbert or Jennifer Aniston poking up here. TV may have been the thing that lit their career, but they've decided to test their swimming skills in the shark tank. Next, sexy encompasses everything from acting skills (sorry Pamela) and character presence to career prospects and how close they come to overheating your television set. Whether they cavort around in lingerie seducing their male lead or leave a bit to the imagination, preferring to wear a gunnysack, all of these ladies are spread with the icing of sex appeal from head to toe. You won't find a tastier group of women in the television universe. Without further ado, here are the ladies that light up our lives.

PM Rating System

Peter Hammill - FoolGrade: B+ | Genre: Prog-Rock
Summary: Hopefully, with re-masters like Fool's Mate (and many others too plentiful to mention) the public will get a better picture of art-rock instead of immediately thinking that mediocre groups like Styx, Kansas, and Queen were the be-all and end-all of this much maligned rock form.

Released in 1971, Peter Hammill's first solo outing; Fool's Mate showcased a somewhat different side of Van Der Graaf Generator's front man. Less ponderous than VDGG's offerings, Fool's Mate gathers together a dozen songs written in the mid-sixties by Hammill (for the most part) and brought to life with the help of his fellow band mates.

The tunes vary from whimsical nonsense like "Imperial Zeppelin" to atmospheric tone poems like "Viking." Hammill's piano playing and acoustic guitar work are both expressive, even when sparse. As for his voice, there is little of the bellowing and shrieking that fills albums like Pawn Hearts. These songs are more along the line of "Refugees" from 1970's The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other.

The Cardigans - Super Extra GravityGrade: B | Genre: Rock
Summary: Today's band sees a maturity beyond what we could have expected from the Swedes, and though it may not be what we fell in love with originally, it is surely what we can come to be comfortable with and whose company we can enjoy.

The Cardigans (Nina Persson - vocals, Peter Svensson - guitar, Bengt Lagerberg - drums, Magnus Sveningsson - bass, Lasse Johansson - keyboard, acoustic guitar) flirted with our guilty pleasures in the mid-90's with candy-coated tunes from Emmerdale, Life and First Band on the Moon. It was Nina Perssons' sugary sweet voice that washed away the dirt stains left by the grunge acts that ruled the time's album charts. Here was a band from the land of Abba who reinvented the pop sound with their 60's hippie chick grooves and somehow found space in a crowded industry covered in flannel while moshing in their Doc Martens.

Whether it be our love for the music or our fascination with the sexiest pop tart of her time (we'll call Ms. Perssons the Blondie of our generation), these Swedes lifted us from our funk and made pop cool again. Pardon the overly used expression, but they were our alternative to the alternative. Super Extra Gravity is the latest from The Cardigans, but will it still be a love affair or are we ready to move on to the next "It" thing of the moment?

Will 'Arrested Development' Find New Life on Showtime?

The bugles were already playing taps for the quirky, fledgling Fox comedy Arrested Development when the network effectively pulled the plug on the series, slicing the third season episode order from 22 to 13. Just as a spot was being dug in the television graveyard for one of television's funniest shows, talks are swirling about that the Bluth family may just be getting a change of address to Showtime. Talks at this point are said to be in the very early goings, and that the tab would be a hefty one for the cable network to take on with the show's extensive cast. Arrested Development won the Emmy for best comedy series in 2004 and has been a constant darling of the critics, but the viewers have been hard to come by in its two year run. Hopefully the show will see new life on the more savvy cable channel tier of the dial.

I must admit this Season of Making the Band 3 was my favorite. After last season's show ended without a band, the show basically started over. They held auditions around the country and chose an entirely new cast, except for three girls who were invited back from the previous season: Aubrey, Aundrea, and Malika. Once again, the girls were moved into a New York apartment. Only this time, they were not in the lap of luxury. The apartment had been remolded and looked more like army barracks than the Diddy inspired creations of past episodes. Nevertheless, the girls worked very hard, Diddy even made them run 5 miles and then treated there aching muscles with a little dance rehearsal at the Alvin Ailey Dance studio. Throughout the season, we have met some very dedicated and talented girls; some we loved and some we hated, but many who we simply admired.

Following their 1975 release, Godbluff, one of England's most severely serious proponents of progressive rock, Van Der Graaf Generator used the momentum of that dark vision to create a more hopeful set of songs. Still Life, though characteristic of Van Der Graaf's usual "Sturm und Drang," rests a little easier on the ears. Eventually, like all things Van Der Graaf, the lions are let out of the cage and the listener must bolster himself for the fangs to come.

Sleeper CellGrade: A | Genre: Drama/Suspense
Summary: Sleeper Cell is the best new drama of the year. It is a cutting edge series, providing a haunting portrait of a subject all of us know and fear yet most know painfully little about.

Since the 9/11 attacks, the word terrorist triggers that pit to form in America's collective stomach. We've learned that nothing is safe and all of us are targets for no other reason than for the country we call home. This generalized fear has been deftly exploited by our politicians at the highest level of government and even plunged us into an unjust war. The fear is nameless and shapeless, and we are held hostage by something we can't grasp. Even if we could define it, I think most of us are afraid to take a really long look at exactly what 'it' is. It could be our neighbors, our colleagues, even our family. What separates the terrorists from the people we come across in our everyday isn't as radical as we would like to believe. Extremist ideals are often covered over by little league games and family picnics in the park. Showtime's cunning new series Sleeper Cell takes our gravest enemy and sticks him in our living room. We're asked to watch him eat, play with his children, and find his way in life -- putting a face on the terror that seeps into our nightmares.

Summary: Van Der Graaf Generator labored in obscurity virtually their entire career leaving behind one of musicdom's strangest catalogues of sound. Godbluff is a great bit of prog-rock history getting its due.

In the early seventies, just around the time that everyone began to go disco crazy, there were a faithful few who refused to give up on the majesty and pomp of their beloved art-rock. Bands like Caravan, Gentle Giant and Strawbs proudly waved the flag of pretension, but it was on Britain's Famous Charisma Label that two of the most overblown progressive rock bands offered up to the masses their gloriously twisted idea of music. One band, Genesis, after a string of brilliant oddball releases, went onto huge popularity when they lost the groups leading visionary, Peter Gabriel. The other band, Van Der Graaf Generator (named after American physicist Robert Van de Graaf's high voltage invention) labored in obscurity virtually their entire career leaving behind one of musicdom's strangest catalogues of sound.

Say hello to everyone's favorite motorcycle cops, CHiPs. Wilmer Valderrama, of That 70s Show, has signed on to fill Erik Estrada's role as Ponch. The project is said to being built around Valderrama. I think I still have CHiPs uniform around here from when I was a kid. I wonder if they'll let me be Jon?

Do You Want Chips with That? J-Lo, Hubbie to Star in Salsa Movie.
Category: Film News

Jennifer Lopez, will star with her husband, Marc Anthony, in a music-based flick focusing on the life of late salsa king, Puerto Rican singer Hector Lavoe. The film entitled, El Cantante, or The Singer, has started filming in New York with additional shooting also planned for Puerto Rico. Release for this J-Lo produced, hubbie/wife feature is scheduled for sometime next year.

The most important concern for moviegoers is that, while we know Marc Anthony can and will sing, J-Lo might try to go for a duet with him. I urge caution if this is reported to take place in this movie. (Sorry to mention this, but remember their Oscar duet a while ago?)

MurderballGrade: A- | Genre: Documentary/Sports
Summary: Murderball is a fascinating adventure, unleashing your mind on how you think of paraplegic individuals. These men are stunning athletes possessing tremendous talents, coupled with an inextinguishable will.

When I say the word paraplegic, I would imagine a lot of people conjure up images of wheelchairs, hospitals, care nurses and a pretty limited life, constrained by their physical handicap. Even the most open minded probably wouldn't think of hard-hitting rugby players. Welcome to Murderball. This is full contact, pimp my wheelchair, no helmets, fiercely competitive action where they make the most of what they have to work with instead of pitying themselves for what they are not. This is a film pulsing with empowerment that shows the paraplegic community, and those of us that look on, a wheelchair is simply another one of life's obstacles that begs to be conquered.

George Bush Worst President Ever?
Category: Did You Know
Posted by Mark Runyon | December 07, 2005 | 03:40 PM

Many people say off handed remarks about the President like, "this guy is the worst one ever," but rarely have we had anyone official back those claims up in the historical sense. Well, it seems 50 of the 415 historians recently polled said just that, outranking the perennial Presidential whipping post -- James Buchanan. Buchanan may have fumbled the country into the civil war with his borderline treasonous activity, but Bush is a winner on all fronts. Some of his stunning achievements in office so far include taking the country into an unwinnable war, alienating friend and foe alike. Bankrupting the country on heightened military spending and slashing taxation among the richest Americans. He's proved himself to be incompetent in both foreign (Iraq) and domestic affairs (New Orleans). He's mounted an attack on the core American principle of separation of church and state. Not to mention, deliberately "misleading" the American people on affairs foreign and domestic, and the list goes on. Just remember, he's got another two years to bolster his shinning resume for the historical annals. Only the passage of time can truly say if this rube is in fact the biggest loser. On the bright side, historians generally say there have been worse guys than Bush milling around the White House -- V.P. Dick Cheney seemed to come up a lot.

Nip/Tuck's Carver Opens Up on Myspace
Category: Show News
Posted by Mark Runyon | December 07, 2005 | 11:26 AM

The online community Myspace just became a bit more sinister. On the closing credits of last night's episode of Nip/Tuck was a commercial clip announcing our knife happy slasher is carving out his own piece of cyberspace. Checking in this morning, it appears the Carver enjoys lounging in his bath robe and bunny slippers to watch According to Jim, likes to "Whip It" to early 80s pop, and ladies, he's single...well assuming he's a he that is. The Carver already has 22000 friends, speculating that he's everyone from Sean to President Bush. The consensus seems to be leaning towards Quentin or Matt. My money is on that weasel Quentin.

First Look: Winter 2006 Television Pilots

I don't know if you've noticed yet, but it's starting to feel a tad bit nipply out. That, of course, signals the big man in the red suit is gearing up for his annual breaking and entering, pigskin extravaganza reaches a heinous roar and hapless TV execs take yet another jab at justifying their salaries after a poor fall showing. January is fast approaching, and a whole new crop of dramas, comedies and faux reality series rush to our TV sets, longing to be the next Desperate Housewives, yet each are two episodes away from being mounted beneath the guillotine. What can I say? The fickle American public is thirsty for blood. Can you blame them? You can't throw this much garbage at anyone and expect them not to get tired of taking out the trash. So this time around, they try to plug the gapping holes in their line-ups by assaulting us with star firepower (Jenna Elfman, Heather Graham, Vanessa Williams), dancing and skating with celebs, not to mention yet another Law & Order-esque rip-off. Better start digging those holes in the TV graveyard because in a few short months, we're going to need them.

Pitt to Adopt Jolie's Kids, Still Not a Couple
Category: Fodder
Posted by Mark Runyon | December 05, 2005 | 11:50 PM

Well they may not be officially "going steady," but they may soon be splitting the diaper changing and feeding duties. Brad Pitt is seeking to become the adoptive father of Angelina Jolie's two adopted children, having his surname officially hitched to hers. In the July issue of GQ, Pitt said his recent trip to Africa spurred him on to adopt. After swiping Zhara from Ethiopia in July, Jolie is said to be looking to adopt again. A round baker's dozen would be nice or perhaps enough to form the Pitt-Jolie baseball team for family gatherings. Ah and people wonder why the children of Hollywood starlets are so mucked up in the head.

NBC Looks to Reclaim 'Must-See' Thursdays
Category: Television News
Posted by Mark Runyon | December 05, 2005 | 10:13 AM

Ever since Friends and Fraiser signed off the air, NBC has been dragging the bottom of the ratings heap. They're hoping a refreshed schedule will help revive their ratings struggle. Gone is the pathetic Joey, and the new Jason Lee comedy My Name is Earl will take its place. The remaining line-up includes Will & Grace, The Office and the new comer Four Kings. Can this new line-up steal viewers from the unstoppable CBS combination of Survivor and CSI? As a side note, Scrubs is said to officially be returning in January on Tuesday nights. It will show back-to-back episodes from 9 to 10.

The Real Grey's Anatomy Soundtrack
Category: PM Music Commentary
Posted by Mark Runyon | December 03, 2005 | 11:49 PM

A handful of years ago if a musician sold the rights to his song for use on a television show or, God forbid, a commercial, they were labeled a sellout, immediately to be shunned as a musical pariah. Remember the stink that was created when the Rolling Stones let Microsoft use "Start Me Up" to launch Windows 95? Now, not only is it accepted, artist's are signing away their first born to get their tracks exposed to the receptive, hip audiences of television's elite shows. Bands like Telepopmusik and Citizen Cope probably wouldn't exist if it weren't for the launching pad of television. Grey's Anatomy isn't just one of the hottest new commodities on the tube, it also features some of the best new music. It is consistently a savvy mix of unknown, up-and-coming artists that seem tailor fit for the scene they are serenading. Now its time to take these hundred or so songs and find the most compelling musical candy that Grey's has sweetened our life with. I only wish they had taken as much care assembling this soundtrack as they do in their weekly duties laying down episode tracks.

Le Samourai (1967)

PM Rating System

Le SamouraiGrade: B+ | Genre: Foreign/Classic/Crime
Summary: If your brain is ready for a workout, Le Samourai can be a very satisfying experience and is evidence that America doesn't hold a monopoly on classic cinema.

Something tells me the French really miss the days of the silent film. I can't speak for the entire film community on the other side of the pond, but those I've seen seem to be some mix of dark and brooding, quirky and visually stunning (The City of Lost Children, A Very Long Engagement) or deep character studies, served by torrents of inner storms (Belle De Jour, Bleu). They all seem to be very thoughtfully executed and artistically rich. They also seem to revel in the lost art of telling a story with an economy of words. Any writer worth anything knows its better to envelop the reader's senses, making their audience feel a scene rather than just spelling out the mundane details. The 1967 film, Le Samourai takes this minimalist approach to the extreme, telling the story of a contract killer with a Zen-like approach to his executions. The film is told almost without the benefit of words and it sits in stark contrast to modern American cinema.

My Morning Jacket - Z

My Morning Jacket - ZGrade: B+ | Genre: Alt-Southern-Rock
Summary: Whether or not super stardom is in their future remains to be seen, but as long as they continue to mature with their music (and they will) brighter days are still ahead.

If Neil Young suddenly went Alt-Southern-Rock, he would be heading up the Louisville Kentucky quintet, My Morning Jacket. Widely known within indie circles, mainstream audiences my have noticed their alter-ego, Ruckus, performing Skynrd's southern fried classic "Freebird" in Cameron Crowe's latest melodrama, Elizabethtown. Missteps aside, their fourth full length album, Z, has been creating a mild stir on the CMJ retail charts with their meshing of sounds spanning the music spectrum from reggae to R&B to ambient...all under a sourthern rock umbrella. With more keyboards, sturdier guitar riffs and the freedom to experiement, Z takes the jacket off My Morning Jacket to reveal a band who's not afraid to challenge themselves and their audience.

After a half season of bitching about pregger Jennifer Garner on Alias, the rugrat has finally shot through the escape hatch. The baby girl has been named Violet and was born at 6:26pm on Thursday. She is said to have followed after mom, karate chopping the doc on the way out, and has already shown an eye for picking stinker scripts like dear ol' dad.
