In the weeks leading up to the Oscars, Brokeback Mountain seemed a virtual lock to take home best picture honors for its story of homosexual love shared between two cowboys. Critics circles around the country seemed to be hoisting the crown upon them. Though director Ang Lee walked away from the party with accolades, the racial charged drama Crash took top honors. A gay themed drama has never won the biggest prize to date. As expected, Philip Seymour Hoffman secured best actor credits for Capote, and Reese Witherspoon edged out the Desperate Housewife for best actress. George Clooney and Rachel Weisz rounded out the supporting categories.
