Isaac Hayes Hangs Up Chef Hat
By: Mark Runyon | Category: Show News | 03/14/06 | 11:02 AM

Soul singer Isaac Hayes has quit being the voice of Chef on South Park after a recent dissatisfaction with the show's cuts at religion. Hayes, a practicing member of the Church of Scientology, was quoted as saying, "there is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins." A recent episode of the cartoon poked fun at Tom Cruise and Scientology, but Hayes didn't specifically mention that show in his reasoning. South Park co-creator Matt Stone says that episode is exactly what caused this rift. "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology. He has no problem - and he's cashed plenty of cheques - with our show making fun of Christians," Stone said. It remains to be seen whether the character will be written out or simply revoiced.
