Guests at the White House Correspondent's Association dinner got a little more than they bargained for from the Comedy Central fake new show host, Stephen Colbert, Saturday night. Colbert stayed in character all evening, firing off stinging satirical statements concerning the president and the press. Colbert told Bush to ignore his lousy approval ratings because they were based on reality "and reality has a well-known liberal bias." As for the presses' role in government, he quipped, "the president makes decisions . . . the press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions." In your spare time, he advised them, "write that novel you got kicking around in your head -- you know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know -- fiction." Bush and first lady Laura were among the 2600 in attendance and were reportedly not amused by Colbert's comments.
