Crowe Flies the Coop

Sentencing of Russell Crowe for his phone tossing ways further solidifies the fact that there are actually two judicial systems operating in America: one for celebrities and one for the rest of us. Crowe was originally charged with second-degree assault, a felony which could have put his acting career behind bars for seven years and jeopardized his visa status. Instead, he worked a deal for a third degree charge, with the possibility of one year jail time, which was reduced to time served -- one night. His status in America still seems in jeopardy since the INS for some reason frowns upon criminal activity. After all is said and done, I think the immigration official will slide in Gladiator and think, "we pay millions of dollars a year to see him beat the crap out of someone. How can we deport him for one lousy phone?"

Lindsay Lohan Goes Indie
Category: Actor Profiles
Posted by Mark Runyon | November 04, 2005 | 12:51 PM
Up until now, Lindsay Lohan has been better known for her solid work in forgettable teen movies. That is all about to change as Lohan declares her independence. This week she signed on to Bobby, a low-budget Emilio Estavez flick profiling the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. Now she is said to have committed to Chapter 27, starring across from her newly rumored boyfriend Jared Leto. The film focuses on the murder of John Lennon. All this indie credibility may be for naught if she continues to bludgeon us with bad pop melodies on her sophomore album A Little More Personal coming December 6th. Bobby is slated to begin filming next week with Chapter 27 starting early next year.

Claire Danes Resurrected

Claire Danes in Terminator III? I shutter to think what Angela Chase would think of what became of her later self. After a couple insignificant parts in good films (The Hours, Igby Goes Down), Terminator seemed to be the movie that would officially sink her film career, leaving her among the great actresses of her generation that never quite popped. I'm happy to see Claire resurrected, starring in two films releasing this month: Shopgirl and the Family Stone. The buzz of her acting is definitely making people take notice. CNN caught up with Danes to discuss her first nude scene, similarities between Shopgirl's Mirabelle and My So-Called Life's Angela and getting it on with Steve Martin who is old enough to be her father.

War of the Worlds Preview
Category: Actor Profiles
Posted by Mark Runyon | June 25, 2005 | 10:38 PM
War of the Worlds is being described as a throw back to Speilberg's early days in cinema, "A Close Encounters of the Third Kind with a far more sinister edge." That is quite a lofty statement. Based on the H.G. Wells alien invasion story of 1898, War of the Worlds seeks to strike the same fear in audiences as the 1938 Orson Welles' radio broadcast. Shades of Ray

It isn't just the way Foxx's voice alters in pitch and speed (he's already discussed the common mistake of going the high-pitched Mickey Mouse route, whereas Tyson's voice "is lower in tone when he's actually speaking"). It's also his mannerisms, the way he squints his eyes, hunches his shoulders, and pushes back his neck as if he's on a swivel-ready for a punch or facing down a bank of cameras at a press conference.

From the moment she was launched onto the scene with her Oscar winning performance in Girl Interrupted, Angelia has been a bit of an enigma. A brilliant actress who devotes herself to her causes (Beyond Borders), taps into her inner sex goddess (Original Sin) and isn't afraid to do the occasional paycheck film (Taking Lives). Her personal life is constant tabloid fodder from the endless speculations on her romances, bizarre tales of her marriage to Billy Bob and the estrangement from her father, Jon Voight. Regardless she is a strong, independent spirited woman, unaffected by it all, who follows her own path. She settles in with Premiere to discuss her recent films, the activism and the human side of Angelina.
