Well I'm glad to see criminals aren't getting any smarter. Eric James Torpy arranged a plea agreement for the accusation of shooting with the intent to kill and rob. He was sentenced to a 30-year term for his crime in which he asked there to be 3 additional years tacked on to correspond with Larry Bird's jersey number 33. "He said if he was going to go down, he was going to go down in Larry Bird's jersey," Oklahoma County District Judge Ray Elliott said. "We accommodated his request and he was just as happy as he could be."

Clinton the Condom?
Category: Offbeat
Posted by Mark Runyon | October 05, 2005 | 03:39 PM

Bill Clinton is about to become the new Trojan man. The sexcapades of Clinton and Monica Lewinsky will finally serve the public good by stopping pregnancies in China. Guangzhou Haokian has begun producing contraceptives bearing the names of the high profile figures spelled in Chinese, Kelitun and Laiwensiji. A 12-pack of Clinton's will run you around $3 and the Lewinsky's go for about $2. The manufacturer doesn't see any problems using the names since they are the foreign surnames. I can see the commercial now "strap on your Clinton so you don't get anything on her dress. Protection so great no one will be able to prove you had 'sexual intercourse with that woman.'"

Psychopaths Wanted to Make Killing in Markets

Researchers have discovered that the best financial traders could be certifiable psychopaths. These emotionally impaired individuals were more inclined to take higher stakes gambles and make better financial decisions over those well-adjusted members of society. The scientists found that emotion led some of the group to avoid risk even when the benefits outpaced the potential losses. Many company chief executive officers and corporate lawyers show the same trait. I can just see the list of perks offered: your own corner office, weekend villa in Conneticut and a spacious freezer locker for your corpse collection.

Well, maybe not everyone...just those in your city provided the city agrees to change its name to "Dish." "EchoStar Communications Corp., which operates the Dish Network, said Tuesday it will provide 10 years' worth of free satellite television service for every household in a U.S. town that legally makes the change." Dish, GA instead of Atlanta, GA? Dish, CA instead of Los Angeles, CA? Don't count it. You could try your luck moving to a small town, but who would do that for free satellite television service?

Saw II's Latest Publicity Poster

Whoah! Cheers to Indie distributor, Lions Gate Films, for pushing boundaries of "The Man!" Jeers for the grotesque publicity poster included in marketing materials for the sequel to last year's surprise hit Saw. Unapproved by The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the poster featuring two severed fingers was distributed to Web sites by the arthouse for sale. Lions Gate has agreed to contact these web sites to have the unapproved material removed. "It is essential that film distributors comply with the rules of the Advertising Administration so that parents retain the confidence they have in the ratings certified by CARA and that advertising and publicity material associated with rated films is appropriate for all audiences," said Marilyn Gordon, director of the Advertising Administration. "We thank Lions Gate for its actions taken to correct the issues with the advertising for 'Saw II.'"

You be the judge. Check out the infamous poster on CNN.

Jimi Hendrix Tossed from Army for Choking the Bishop

According to the Smoking Gun, Private Hendrix spent a little too much time with little Jimi for the Army's taste. They've uncovered Army documents assessing Hendrix to be a lackluster soldier who slept on the job, overlooked regulations and was caught pleasuring himself in the latrine. The more interesting part is the consequences of this event. Had he not gotten tossed from the Army, he would have gone to Vietnam. There is a good chance we may have never heard that magnificent Stratocaster blaring the birth of the epic guitarist.

Hundreds Strip Naked for Art

1500 volunteers stripped down into their birthday suits in the name of art. American artist Spencer Tunick was shooting in Newcastle and Gateshead for his latest piece. Past works included 7000 people baring all in Barcelona and 4000 in Melbourne. Volunteers pre-registered for the event from Peru, Belgium and Australia. When one of the volunteers was asked how she felt about this open display, she replied, "It was strange not to be self-conscious in that environment - normally I wouldn't even wear a skirt, I only wear trousers, so nobody even sees my legs. The main problem was avoiding stepping in vomit - there were a few chips and kebabs around."

Nike Free has a new commercial touting their revolutionary new sneakers that give you so much flexibility you feel like you are running barefoot. Every now and again, a taxi goes by in the surf or they pass a newsstand in the sand. The next thing you know, we are stopping at an intersection in New York. iPods Can Make You Deaf

Posted by Mark Runyon | May 18, 2005 | 01:21 PM

Experts say the huge popularity of iPods and other players could leave a generation of music fans with serious problems. A leading expert warned that people had to use the players more responsibly. Andrew Reid, head of audiology at the Royal United Hospital in Bristol, said: "This is a big problem for young people, and there is a real risk that prolonged listening could lead to permanent hearing damage."

Mr Reid added: "If you are on a Tube, you have to turn the player up to dangerous levels just to hear it. Over time, this is going to lead to problems like tinnitus and severe damage to the inner ear." Tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss occurs when the delicate hair nerve cells that line the inner ear suffer repeated trauma from loud sound vibrations.

Big Mac beats
Category: Offbeat
Posted by Patrick Vu | March 29, 2005 | 01:18 PM

McDonald's is hoping to tempt rappers away from their usual fare of guns and women to include the words Big Mac in their lyrics.

The fast food giant is offering up to £2.80 every time the song is played on the radio, according to US magazine Advertising Age.

And the company reckons it can seduce the more hardcore stars of hip hop into setting Big Mac to a beat.

"This partnership reflects our appreciation and respect for the most dominant youth culture in the world," a McDonald's spokesman said.

He stressed that the company would have final approval over any lyrics and was only targeting artists whose style identifies with their brand.

US lobby group Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood was less impressed, however.

"They're dumping one of their most high fat, high calorific products on kids in a way that the kids won't even know its happening," said founder Susan Linn.
