Six Feet Under: Season 5 Finale

Six Feet Under Episode: A+ | Season: A- | Genre: Drama
Summary: The final episode of Six Feet Under was perhaps the most deeply affecting television show I've ever seen. You could tell this show was interwoven into Alan Ball's heart and his subtle brilliance couldn't be contained.

Saying goodbye is hard to do whether it's a broken relationship, a pet dying or something as seemingly trivial as one of your favorite television shows drawing its curtains for the final time. They all walk into your life and change you in a way that you never expected when you first invited them in. They help you grow as a person and see the world through a borrowed pair of eyes. Six Feet Under started out as the most peculiar television show in existence, feeding on the unconventional, and closed as the most cherished. The series finale was about family, which is something that was always so fundamental to these lives yet they struggled with so badly. There was always something keeping them from completely being there for one another and letting down their walls enough to show the love that was hidden in their hearts. This was also an evening of change and healing from wounds suffered so deep by Nate's sudden passing. It was a chance to make everyone whole again.

Queer as FolkEpisode: B | Season: B | Genre: Drama

It's been five years since we were first introduced to the boys of Liberty Avenue. They were as gay as gay could be and wore their pride for the world to see. It's a world that reluctantly looked the other way as long as gays kept their place in the social order and didn't shake the boat. Like any opposed minority, it was only a matter of time before they rose up. They wanted the same rights every heterosexual couple enjoys, which has sparked a nationwide backlash of mammoth proportions. Queer as Folk was one of the pieces bringing us to where we are today. It was the middle finger to all those who said they were an abomination. It was the series that showed heterosexual America what gay life was really like, clearing aside the cluttered stereotypes and misconceptions. Yet it only reached those whose minds were open enough to receive it. It brought its series to a close Sunday night in a fitting tribute to this groundbreaking series.

Summary: Nate cashes in his chips to become a very personal client of Fisher and Diaz.

I don't usually take the effort to comment on individual episodes of my favorite television shows because there's no time. No knock to the clever kittens at Television Without Pity, but if I kept a running chronicle of my television watching, even as sparse as it is, I'd have no life. This week's episode of Six Feet Under was an important moment in the show's history. It's the end of an era if you will. You knew, with the final season wrapping itself to a close, the writers were going to shake things up, and I think it's safe to say that we are thoroughly shaken. Last week closed with Nate having a strange numbness in his arm, which led to his collapse on the floor of Maggie's apartment. They had just had sex, putting an ominous tone on his ever-struggling relationship with Brenda. This week opens with Nate getting packed into an ambulance as poor Maggie frets, trying to figure out what she is going to tell Brenda. Let the fireworks begin.

Grade: B | Genre: Drama
Summary: This episode wasn't anything particularly special or extraordinary, which is strange considering it was the wedding episode. Six Feet Under is always understated so it really shouldn't be surprising they eased into this life-charging event very casually.

So I wonder how living in a funeral home your entire life shapes you? I'd imagine that you would probably have a pretty skewed sense of humor, a whole library of stray thoughts on death and mortality and a jumbled psychological make-up that was grabbed out of the quirky bin. That is certainly the case for the Fisher clan which sign-in for their first step towards the TV show afterlife. After five brilliant, emotion filled, slightly bizarre seasons, the award winning HBO drama will bid us ado. There is no time for grieving or the deep settled "what ifs". There are a host of interesting lives dying to be lived and some ugly split plot lines to trim up. This episode is a look at new beginnings and the sadness and joy that can be rubbed from their passage.

Grade: B | Genre: Drama
Summary: While it's still lugging around a lot of soap opera baggage, the season premiere has shown a lot of promise by getting back to the roots of what made the series magnetic in the beginning.

The boys of Liberty Avenue are back opening their fifth and final season of Queer as Folk. It doesn't seem like five years have passed since the Showtime series began the Herculean task of opening minds through their raw portrayal of gay and lesbian life, helping to pave the way for other series like the L Word. It's first season marked the first time that gay and lesbian characters really took center stage and weren't a comedic device for their heterosexual cast members to apply tired stereotypes. Folk has never shied away from the gritty realities of gay life, frequently including explicit sex scenes and raw dialog that would make the major networks squirm in their seats. Though the story of these lives is finding its way to an end, the imprint of this show will be felt in programming long after the music stops and the dance floor vacates at Babylon.

Episode: B- | Season: C | Genre: Drama
Summary: This episode was just silly. While the revelation at the end definitely hooked you for next season, it didn't do much to redeem the 59 minutes that came before it.

This season of Alias has been like a bad dream that you can't seem to wake up from. First, the gang gets branched off from the C.I.A. in the form of a covert group A.P.O. (Authorized Personnel Only -- so cheesy I can't say it without crackers). Then we find out Sloan is heading this group by some bizarre twist of fate. Since then the episodes have slowly sunk in quality, seeming to gravitate to the supernatural and more soap opera-esque moments. The show is hopelessly tarnished, and I've found myself questioning whether I should actually turn on the TV Wednesday nights. But the same incredible magnetism that made the God-awful Daredevil a must-see is toying with me again -- Jennifer Garner. The woman is blindingly hot. She is the reining champ of my top 5 list four years running, and I haven't seen a woman yet that's got the goods to dethrone her. Last night, it was time to bid a fond farewell to our Alias crew for another season in hopes that they will hire a new writing team over the summer.

The Contender: The Next Great Human DramaGrade for the Season: A+ | Genre: Reality Television
Summary: Co-Executive Producer, Sylvestor Stallone, has taken the Rocky franchise and translated it onto the small screen with the same heart and emotion that made "The Italian Stallion" so endearing. It was a knock out of a season, and we can only hope it makes it way back to NBC.

The Contender series gave 16 boxing professionals the chance to jump-start a career they've long fantasized about. All have different backgrounds but with the same desire to succeed in a sport in which they've invested so much of themselves.

What has been one of the more engaging new programs of the current television season, scripted or reality, finally came to an end last night in a show down between the East Coast's "Pride of Providence," Peter Manfredo, and the man they call the "Latin Snake," Sergio Mora, from the West. It was a fight driven by the love for their families and the will to make better and more stable lives for themselves.

Episode: B+ | Season: A | Genre: Drama
Summary: The season finale of Grey's Anatomy didn't feel anymore dramatic than any other episode, which was a welcomed thing. It's nice to have a show that seems to value consistency over bending the reality of their TV universe.

Sex, lies and syphilis descend on Seattle Grace Hospital for the season finale of ABC's newest hit drama Grey's Anatomy. Yes sad to say that after its abbreviated first season, Grey's Anatomy will give way to summer as we say goodbye to our new favorite interns and attendings. This episode doesn't drop the usual bombshells on us that we've come to expect from the May sweeps, but they certainly see fit to leave us hanging with one plot wrench that is sure to shake up things when they pick up their stethoscopes in the fall.

The Apprentice - Season FinaleGrade for the Season: A- | Genre: Reality Television
Summary: Obviously, Donald Trump has quite a bit of business savvy and is able to make smart decisions. However, choosing Kendra as his lasted Apprentice was a no brainer, which made his job so much easier.

"Kendra, Your Hired!" The sweetest words that this season's sure thing could possibly hear were finally spoken as Kendra Todd became the first woman from The Apprentice series to be hired by Donald Trump. After 16 weeks of business minded missions, 18 contestants were narrowed down to just one person most fit to take over one of "The Donald's" companies.

Was it any surprise? Kendra, a successful real estate entrepreneur who initially seemed to be "under the radar," shined during her last weeks of the 17 week interview and proved to everyone, without a doubt, that she is the best candidate for the job.

Summary: "Grey's Anatomy" has tremendous potential to become one of the hot new shows this season. It has that smart, hungry feel of a fresh, potent series that "ER" misplaced long ago.
Starring: Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, James Pickens Jr., T.R. Knight, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl & Isaiah Washington
Network: ABC
Programming: Sunday 10-11 ET

Grey's AnatomyFresh off bemoaning the state of television today, I think we may have something worth sinking into the couch on Sunday night. "Grey's Anatomy" is a smart, new drama following a group of surgical interns as they swim out of their small med school pond into the shark-infested waters that await them at Seattle Grace Hospital. The show's focus rests on Meredith Grey played by Ellen Pompeo (Old School, Moonlight Mile). She is a perky, blonde intern who comes from impeccable medical pedigree.

Summary: The bad news is "The Office's" dry wit might have a hard time finding an audience in mainstream America. It's more for fans of shows like "Scrubs" where the humor isn't so obvious. The good news is that, the show will be moved right after "Scrubs" on Tuesday nights where there already is a built-in audience.
Starring: Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, B.J. Novak, Rainn Wilson
Network: NBC

The OfficeThough we've briefly discussed how American Television continues to endure a creative funk in favor of the ever-increasing output of Reality shows, we've also stated that borrowing from the Brits has been an easy way to buy more time until the next big breakthrough.

The latest reaffirming evidence proving us right is the Americanization of the British hit, "The Office." It would have been very easy to dismiss this new NBC series as a copycat sure to suffer the same fate as the most recent Brit to American failure, "Coupling." However, "The Office" is special. For anyone who's ever worked in an office environment, this docu-reality-parody show is for you.

Summary: Hosted by Sly and Sugar Ray Leonard, "The Contender" is a human drama built on the same foundation that made "Rocky" so popular and widely accepted, pure heart and a desire to rise above expectations.

The Contender: The Next Great Human DramaStarring: Sylvestor Stallone, Sugar Ray Leonard, and 16 boxing professionals
Network: NBC

Every so often, a new film will come along and connect with the human spirit in all of us. The endearing cast of characters will strum your emotional chords as they take you along on their journey of self-discovery and triumph with us cheering all the way. You won't find "The Contender" on the big screen because it's not a movie. It's not even scripted. It is Reality TV the way it should be done. Forget "Survivor" and "The Apprentice," the champions of the "unscripted" are about to get knocked out by this hard-nose and emotionally draining new show by Mark Burnett, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Sylvestor Stallone.
