ABC Ditches Gibson's Holocaust Miniseries
Category: Television News
Posted by Mark Runyon | August 01, 2006 | 10:14 AM

After languishing two years in production without a script, ABC has decided to drop production on a Holocaust miniseries it was working on with Mel Gibson's production company. Just Friday, Gibson was arrested on DUI charges and reportedly launched into a crazy tirade about Jews, accusing the officer of being Jewish and that the Jews have started all wars. The Catholic actor apologized Saturday yet with a father who is a Holocaust denier it may fall on deaf ears. The incident has raised many questions concerning all of Gibson's future projects with his Icon Productions company. Gibson's delayed Mayan-language film Apocalypto is set for release December 8th.

Corey Feldmen and Corey Haim defined cheesy 80s teen film like License to Drive and the Lost Boys are in the running for a come back. A new show called the Coreys is being shopped around Tinseltown. The two would play fictionalized versions of themselves yet in keeping with their real lives. Haim has struggled since his hayday with drugs and his finances while Feldmen has taken a try at music and kept racking up resume credits with random roles. It should be crap television at its best.

After a seven-day stay in the water bubble, world record chaser and publicity hound, David Blaine, came up short. He held his breath for 7 minutes and 8 seconds, a full minute and fifty seconds short of the record. The fruit loop didn't need to stay submerged for six days to conquer the record, but it looked more sensational for the ABC special David Blaine: Drowned Alive. Its not known if his failed attempt will push him on to take on the challenge again.

Colbert Roasts Bush

Guests at the White House Correspondent's Association dinner got a little more than they bargained for from the Comedy Central fake new show host, Stephen Colbert, Saturday night. Colbert stayed in character all evening, firing off stinging satirical statements concerning the president and the press. Colbert told Bush to ignore his lousy approval ratings because they were based on reality "and reality has a well-known liberal bias." As for the presses' role in government, he quipped, "the president makes decisions . . . the press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions." In your spare time, he advised them, "write that novel you got kicking around in your head -- you know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know -- fiction." Bush and first lady Laura were among the 2600 in attendance and were reportedly not amused by Colbert's comments.

Much like the X-Files film, the television series will still continue to put Jack Bauer in mission impossible type situations. The film will just serve as an added adventure. Unlike the show, the film will crunch the normal 24 hour block into the standard 2 hour feature. Texas Trumps USC for National Championship
Category: Television News

A season filled with wonder over whether USC or Texas was the best team in the nation was answered tonight at the Rose Bowl. Vince Young put on a highlight reel, passing for 267 yards and running for 200. The clinching victory touchdown came with 19 seconds remaining on fourth down as Young ran the ball in from 8 yards to seal the 41 to 38 victory. Reggie Bush was largely shut down and Leinart was mediocre at best as Lendale White kept USC in contention. It was an amazing win that capped three days of sensational bowl action. How can anyone think pro football has a tenth of the heart and drive of college ball after watching a game like that?

'Big Love' Brings Polygamy to HBO

Bill Paxton will play Bill Henrickson, a home-improvement businessman juggling three wives: Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevingny and Ginnfer Goodwin. Bill's a Viagra popping fool, getting his daily dose as he works through the batting order each night. The series is said to avoid the sizable ick factor and instead focus on just how their day-to-day lives would work. Though on first glance they appear to be Mormons, the Henrickson family is actually an unlabeled offshoot of the religion. The Mormon Church abandoned the practice of polygamy among its members in 1890.

This misjudging seemed to affect all categories. Robertson Preaching Assassination

He said on the 700 Club that it was our duty to stop him from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism." Venezuela is the fifth largest exporter of oil and the US absorbs 59 percent of those exports. Robertson is the same guy that has been recently praying for God to take out another one of the Supreme Court justices so Bush can further push his conservative agenda. NBA Talent Without a Draft Card
Category: Television News
Posted by Mark Runyon | June 29, 2005 | 05:29 PM

It was an exciting night of NBA draft madness as Utah's Andrew Bogut took home top honors and the four horsemen of the Carolina Tarheels rounded out the top 14 picks of the first round. What is more interesting though are the players with NBA talent who closed the night without a team. Three of Kentucky's most promising stars (Hayes, Morris and Azubuike) were all overlooked in favor of foreign imports and unproven high school phenoms. Morris and Azubuike both killed their remaining college eligibility by going after the NBA gold. Given that Kentucky would have been stacked next year with them, and a possible national title contender, it is a decision that made no sense. Florida also suffered, losing their two scoring leaders, Walsh and Roberson, trying for early entry that suffered the same fate. The already weak SEC conference will be even more ailing after the shortsighted nature of these players.

While there has been a lot of buzz about getting a short order for next season, Fox's decision to pick up a full-season, 22-episode order of the quirky series, comes as somewhat of a surprise.

It seems a lot more is going on with Dave Chappelle than we initially thought. The comedian is reported to have checked himself into a South African mental hospital. The wildly successful Chappelle's Show was the top-selling television DVD in history with the second season to be released soon, and the show's future is uncertain. Read more.

Will there be one less doctor Scrubbing in next season?
Category: Television News
Posted by Mark Runyon | April 28, 2005 | 12:45 PM

One of our regular Scrubs is set to take off after this season according to show's creator Bill Lawrence. Lawrence was quoted as saying, "In medicine, if you try to stay true to it at all, this is the year -- because of the way they progress from intern to resident, people would have to go out and get new jobs and not always at the hospital they work in." Make sure you have May 17th marked on your calendar to see which doctor bids Sacred Heart a fond farewell in the season finale.

JAG gets its discharge papers after 10 seasons
Category: Television News

The demise of television's longest running military drama will come Friday night. The decision was more of a demographic one as the coveted 18 to 34 year old audience is just not there. This was the original reason NBC dropped the series after its first season before CBS picked it up. There were questions as to what would become of the show as David Elliott is set for departure because the series can't afford to renew his contract. So will the tease of mad chemistry Mac and Harm finally be resolved? I guess we'll have to tune in to find out for sure.

Hopefully the "Star Wars" hype hasn't turned you off at the theatres because the Sci-Fi messiah himself, George Lucas, has just announced that there are two T.V. projects in the works. One, currently unnamed, will be set between the "Sith" and the original "Star Wars," which started it all. The other is a half hour 3-D animated series, "Clone Wars," set to air on the Cartoon network.

MNF to ESPN, NFL back on NBC
Category: Television News

Wow, Monday Night Football not on ABC? For over 35 years, MNF has been an institution and a ratings staple for the Network who looks to have fumbled the ball. The good news is that a pure sports network will be in control, which has got to be a smarter move than say...hiring Dennis Miller as a co-anchor. Read more.

Grey's Anatomy bumps Boston Legal
Category: Television News
Posted by Mark Runyon | April 11, 2005 | 11:33 AM

I was in a heated discussion a couple weeks ago on Blogcritics over Grey's Anatomy swiping Boston Legal's choice 10pm time slot on ABC. It looks like it will come to pass after all. ABC has announced that Grey's will keep its Sunday night slot and Boston Legal's season will be cut short to accomodate this. It isn't currently known where Boston Legal will end up, but the bump is yet another set back for the retooled version of the Practice.

Feelin' a Little Carolina Blue

So under the guise of TV news, I'll chime in here on the wondrous victory that was North Carolina's Monday night. It was a see saw battle for the ages with Carolina charging ahead to the half only to have the Illini come back and tie it up at the two minute mark. It was the perfect end to what had to be one of the best tournaments in the history of college basketball. Page 2 featured select thoughts on the aftermath of North Carolina/Illnois. Jordon and Dean Smith as tense spectators, the joy of a bench player, McCants' new baby and several other keen observations that wrap up this beautiful moment.

Quick Edit for Desperate Housewives
Category: Television News
Posted by Mark Runyon | April 05, 2005 | 12:41 PM

With the recent death of the Pope, the producers had to make a quick edit to last Sunday night's episode of Desperate Housewives. While attending the funeral of Gabrielle's (Eva Longoria) mother-in-law, Bree said to Lynette "You have to hand it to the Catholics, they do grief better than anyone." Though the line wasn't readily seen as offensive, the decision was made to dub over the word Catholics. Housewives newest neighbor, Grey's Anatomy, seems to be flying high. After a stellar premiere week, it added another 2 million viewers this past week to come in at 18.2 million. This definitely brings into question what ABC is going to do with Boston Legal. It is set to return to its Sunday night slot, but with Grey's success ABC may have to find another time slot for the legal drama.

Williams Sisters to Star in Reality Show

The biggest and baddest names in women's tennis, Venus and Serena Williams, are developing their own reality series to air on the ABC Network. "The series will provide our fans with an up-close, inside look at our lives away from the tennis courts," Venus Williams said.

Not too sure what to make of this one. I don't know if fans would want to see these girls out of their elements away from tennis. Why not let us watch the sister's kick ass on the courts toward another tournament victory?

You heard correctly. The star of "Scrubs" seems the frontrunner for the Chevy Chase role in the upcoming film Fletch Won according to Kevin Smith's web site. Smith stoked the rumor mill by posting Braff's picture in response to a question inquiring about who would play the lead on his message board. Smith is set to start production on the latest Fletch installment once he has finished Clerks 2. Let's just hope that it's more Chasing Amy than Jersey Girl.

NBC Pairs Jesus, Pill-Popping Priest in TV Pilot

It's not surprising to see production studios taking advantage of the current Jesus "trend" that was kick-started by Mel Gibson's "The Passon of the Christ." NBC will soon premiere, "The Book of Daniel," a pilot drama that the network hopes will boost slumping ratings since "Friends" and "Frasier" ended their series run. Will Jesus continue to sell? NBC sure hopes so.

"Prozac Nation" the movie is finally released...on cable television
Category: Film News
Posted by Patrick Vu | March 10, 2005 | 04:11 PM

One of the most candidly depressing memoirs ever written will finally see the light of day as a major motion picture. However, Elizabeth Wurtzel's "Prozac Nation" won't be attracting moviegoers into theatres. Instead, it will premiere via cable television on the STARZ! Network in March. Though the film has been complete for quite some time, rumor has it that "Prozac" tested poorly with audiences raising concern for it's potential failure in theatres.

If you don't see the movie, definitely check out the book.

JAG without Harm?

That is like peanut butter without jelly. David James Elliott is set to part ways with the military drama after 10 years. Harmon Rabb is "JAG" and he is a walking recruitment poster for the armed services. It's hard to believe that they could make a realistic go of it without him. Elliott has signed a deal with ABC's Touchtone Television enabling him to star in a new or existing series as well as create his own ventures.

Beck Down with "The O.C."

You would think that an artist with Beck's credentials would be too good to associate himself with the March 10th episode of "The O.C." However, quirkiness in tact, he naturally makes it look cool. This is no sell-out, and it gives us a chance to preview new tracks from his soon to be release album, "Guereo." Look for the PM Media Review coming this week.

Even Chris Rock came off as tepid and tame at the Oscars
Category: Television News
Posted by Patrick Vu | February 28, 2005 | 01:19 PM

Were you expecting Chris Rock to turn the Oscars from a conservative black tie event into the MTV Awards? Instead, the show was very tame and not too in your face as we know Chris Rock can be. The opening monologue was funny but restricted. I had hoped that the rest of the show would have had a sharper edge especially after Rock's visit to the Magic Johnson Theatres where none of those interviewed saw any of the Oscar nominated films but agreed that "White Chicks" was the best movie ever! Dare I say, "bring back Billy Crystal and his song and dance?"

Christian Troy as OO7?

Julian McMahnonFrom one womanizer to another, Julian McMahon, who plays Christian Troy on the daring FX series, "Nip/Tuck," may be trading in his surgical tools and groupies for high-tech spy gadgets and Bond Girls. I never would have thought of Dr. Troy as succeeding Pierce Brosnan in the James Bond Franchise but do see some potential there.

Jon Stewart: TV Mogul

Jon Stewart: TV MogulThe funniest smart guy (or the smartest funny guy) is in high demand and calling shots. Comedy Central is banking on fans wanting more than a daily dose of Jon Stewart. TV's anti-Walter Cronkite has obtained financing from his home base cable network to resurrect his long-dormant Busboy Production shingle. In exchange, Stewart will give Comedy Central first crack at picking up all the projects it develops, network president Doug Herzog announced Tuesday. Should be good for America!

In case you missed it, you've got to see Stewart's infamous appearance on CNN's Crossfire, which probably made the decision to cancel the show very easy.

Will Oscar give Rock the Boot?
Category: Television News
Posted by Patrick Vu | February 15, 2005 | 10:06 AM

Chris RockFor those who don't know, Chris Rock will be hosting the Oscars, but what's more interesting are the comments he made belittling the event of which he will be the star. Much has been made about him calling the show "idiotic" and a "fashion show" and that "ONLY GAYS WATCH OSCARS." My personal favorite is, "What straight black man sits there and watches the Oscars? Show me one!" Good times! Now, the academy is having second thoughts. What else did they expect? This should turn out to be the edgiest Oscar Night yet...assuming Rock still has the job.
