Is the End of Free TV Near?
Category: Television News
By Mark Runyon | December 29, 2009 | 04:36 PM
As TV revenues continue to shrink because of falling ad dollars and the irrelevance of ads period due to the proliferation of DVRs, the major networks are mulling shutting off the tap. ABC, CBS and NBC could soon be just another cable network since cable channels have dual sources of revenue -- television ads and kickbacks from cable companies that can amount up to $4 a month per viewer as is the case with ESPN. Fox reported that operating income fell 54% for the quarter while other Fox properties FX and Fox News grew income by 41%. News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch (owner of FOX) recently said in a shareholder meeting, "Good programming is expensive. It can no longer be supported solely by advertising revenues."

Wow...I mean wow. How in the hell did the writers/producers of Dexter pull off that season finale? This season as a whole has been a shade off (very slight I might add) of those of season's past, but they brought the Trinity Killer story line to a close in a baffling and utterly shocking moment few watchers will soon forget. Spoilers will rain down in this review since this episode was chocked full of revelations and surprises so if you haven't taken the time to see it for yourself, stop everything you are doing and get to your DVR. This is not a moment that can be put off until the dog is fed and the kids have been put down to bed. Dexter commands your attention now! |
Kendra: Season 1 Premiere
Category: Show Review
By Katie Ryan | June 24, 2009 | 12:34 AM
 | | Grade: D | Genre: Drama Summary: Wow and you thought Kendra was stupid on the Girls Next Door.
Kendra Wilkinson, who stars as the least lovable of the girls on the reality series "The Girls Next Door," now has her own show called Kendra. The show follows Kendra, a 23 year old buxom blond, along her forays out into the real world on her own for the first time. She admits to never having cooked, cleaned or even bought her own groceries. To say she was spoiled would be an understatement to say the least. You may want to watch the show to either see how Kendra ends up succeeding on her own, or to watch all of Kendra's failures. After watching the hour premiere of the series, there is another reason to watch. That would be to see Hank Baskett. |
Scrubs to Suck this Fall

By Mark Runyon | June 21, 2009 | 01:07 AM
As the seasons have gone by, the quirky comedy Scrubs has defied cancellation time and again even though the DNR order had been signed. After making the jump to ABC last fall, Scrubs returns for its final season and will now be set in a university. Turk and Dr. Cox will be the professors with JD, Eliot and Carla making guest appearances. And for all you Janitor lovers out there, he's officially out. His alter ego Neil Flynn will be starring opposite Deborah Heaton in the new ABC fall sitcom The Middle. Scrubs producer Bill Lawrence says that 60% of the cast will be comprised of newbies. Why couldn't they have just let this show die off gracefully a couple seasons ago?

Nurse Jackie Season 1 Premiere
Category: Show Review
By Katie Ryan | June 19, 2009 | 03:51 PM
 | | Grade: B+ | Genre: Drama Summary: In the world of Nurse Jackie, there is no sign in sight that anyone is listening, not even her Percocet.
On a lunch time break from work in the emergency room at All Saints Hospital, an admiring doctor remarks to Nurse Jackie Peyton that she's the only sane one in there. Jackie flashes a smile back, blank as the surgical mask she dons in the emergency room, in a world that could spin off its orbit at any time. |
Weeds: Season 5 Premiere
Category: Show Review
By Katie Ryan | June 10, 2009 | 10:00 AM
 | | Grade: B+ | Genre: Drama Summary: One thing that is for certain is that Weeds does not feel like anything else on television.
Weeds is a remarkable show, moving from dark comedic scenes into some very disturbing moments. The last episode really illustrates this. The opening scenes showing Nancy stuck with Cesar, the right hand man of Esteban, following her around town are hilarious. When Cesar says he is religious, at least to a certain extent, Nancy deadpans that the whole of you shalt not kill what's not working out for you. Cesar responds that he supports guy marriage. |
Handicapping American Idol Season 8
Category: PM Television Commentary
By Mark Runyon | April 09, 2009 | 02:18 AM
There was lots of hemming and hawing last night among the lady judges on whether to throw the life preserver out for Scott MacIntyre, but in the end Simon stepped in and the right decision was made. Scott had miraculously dodged the cutting room floor for numerous weeks, and his wobbly talent finally caught up with him. As politically incorrect as this is to say, if he wasn't blind he wouldn't have made it anywhere near the top 8. America loves those overcoming all odds stories and tends to give the benefit of the doubt much more freely than they should. You could see it on Snoopy's face (Noop Dog) as he stood there in utter disbelief after putting in a solid performance to be this close to being shown the door in favor of America's favorite bleeding heart. Goodbye Scott. You should have performed minus the electric guitar because your closing salvo was ten times better than what was shoveled off on us last night. Now its time to handicap the remaining finalists to see who has a shot at Idol immortality and who is steps away from the glue factory.
Jon Stewart Takes on Cramer, CNBC
Category: Television News
By Mark Runyon | March 13, 2009 | 05:55 PM
Jon Stewart has been known to swing a few solid blows at the media in his day. He single handedly kicked Crossfire off the air and sent Tucker Carlson's bow tie a spinnin'. Now the host of the Daily Show has set his sights on the gross negligence of the financial reporting at CNBC. His primary target last night was none other than avid stock pumper Jim Cramer of Mad Money. Stewart was relentless in his rebuke of CNBC and Cramer's role in not foreshadowing the most epic financial disaster since the Great Depression. Did Cramer swing back and defend the hard hitting news organization? Not so much. The usually verbose Cramer seemed more content to cower at Stewart's continued onslaught of accusations and take the ass whipping that he had coming. Kudos to John Stewart and the Daily Show. Its too bad a comedy news organization is the only one to step up and hold anyone's feet to the fire over this media debacle.

Secret Diary of a Call Girl: Season 2 Finale
Category: Show Review
By Mark Runyon | March 09, 2009 | 07:56 PM
 | | Grade: B- | Genre: Drama Summary: Even though the ending came through like a badly telegraphed pass, this episode wrapped up a very satisfying season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl. We see all the complexities, problems and excitement that Belle brings to Hannah's life.
While Belle's closing exploits in season two of Secret Diary of a Call Girl already seem to be common knowledge for those in the UK, we're just catching up to her unraveling stockings stateside as Showtime wraps this chapter of our delicious high class hooker. Last week, we got a taste of life with Hannah enslaved to the path of the straight and narrow as an office gopher. It seems making copies was too challenging for our blow job queen so she was relegated to hand shredding a never ending stream of documents. Its sad to see such a talented individual sink to such a level in the name of love. Her beau Alex, disgusted at her wanton disregard for morality and the legion of men that have sampled the merchandise, pushes Hannah into this droll existence, raping the very life from her. While I feel for her plight, you've got to make a choice in these delicate situations. If you are going to turn on the red light, you've got to put those fantasy notions of a husband, the white picket fence and 2.5 children to bed. Last week, they dangled the prospect of one last high paying job before Belle's pursed lips. Will she succumb to temptation of her true self or make her peace with a life dressed in mediocrity for love? |

So you've been waiting ever so patiently since the utter silliness of the series finale of Seinfeld swept these lovable schlubs out of our lives. Well they're long awaited reunion aren't donning the peacock feathers of NBC this go around, but rather Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm on cable network HBO. This fall, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Michael Richards and Julia Louis-Dreyfus will put aside their new lives to afford us an extra day in the sun. No details have been revealed thus far concerning the appearance or potential story lines. Larry David was one of the original creators of the hit NBC series that lives on in infamy through massive syndication.

How to Get Super Bowl Tickets
Category: PM Television Commentary
By Mark Runyon | January 14, 2009 | 08:53 AM
Few tickets are more elusive than a ticket to the granddaddy of all sporting events -- the Super Bowl. The World Series, the NBA Finals, Bristol all have to take a backseat to the annual final grudge match of the pigskin. Parties sprout up across the country in its name, and advertisers shell out untold millions just to be associated with it. It is a grand event to watch amongst friends in hi-def surround sound, but nothing quite matches the deafening roar of a touchdown like being at the game. If you ever thought going to a Super Bowl was akin to dating Gisele, you're wrong. Tom Brady isn't taking his mitts off of Victoria's worst kept Secret (would you?), but there are several avenues that you can tap in order to get tickets to this coveted event. Let's take a look at what are options are.
Tina Fey: AP Entertainer of the Year
Category: Television News
By Mark Runyon | December 23, 2008 | 02:16 PM
At least one good thing came out of the Sarah Palin fiasco, the world shined a big spotlight on Tina Fey. The SNL-alum and star of NBC's sensational 30 Rock, Tina Fey has been dubbed by the Associated Press as Entertainer of the Year. The honor is chosen by newspaper editors and broadcast producers based on the performer who had the biggest influence on pop culture in 2008. Runner's up included Robert Downey Jr. and Heath Ledger. Fey's 2008 itinerary has been chocked full of fun. She started the year staring in the film comedy Baby Mama. She won 3 Emmy's for writing, lead actress and series honors for her work on 30 Rock. Then she balanced her time taping new 30 Rock episodes with visiting her old stomping grounds at Saturday Night Live to guest star as Sarah Palin. The hilarious sketches drew record ratings for the show and even an appearance by Palin herself. Catch Tina Fey weekly on 30 Rock -- NBC Thursday's at 9:30pm.

Nip/Tuck Returns January 6
Category: Television News
By Mark Runyon | December 11, 2008 | 01:44 AM
Its been 10 long months since the twisted plastic surgeons of Beverly Hills lit up the screen, but wait no more. Nip/Tuck is set to return for season 6 on FX on Tuesday January 6th at 10pm. This coming season promises to answer many lingering questions like how Sean puts back his life back together after the attack by fruit loop Colleen. We'll also get to check-in on delusional Matt as he continues to rationalize rolling in the hay with his sister, and of course Julie's point blank shooting incident. I'd say the writers have their hands full straighting out this simmering mess.

Jay Leno Goes Primetime
Category: Television News
By Mark Runyon | December 09, 2008 | 01:50 AM
It seems everything old is new again. Jay Leno is set to depart the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien waiting in the wings, but he won't be going too far. NBC has decided to give him his own prime time talk show in the 10pm slot. While this is a risky proposition if Leno can't pull more than his current 5 million viewing audience, it also is a big cost saving venture for the strapped network. The peacock network has been slashing top execs frequently as it struggles through restructuring in the face of poor ratings amidst the dismal economic backdrop.

'the Office' Spin-Off Takes Shape
Category: Show News
By Mark Runyon | November 21, 2008 | 02:56 AM
It turns out the Office Spin-Off isn't so much an Office spin-off after all. Ready to have your brains scrambled? Rashida Jones (Jim's ex Karen Filippelli) has signed on to the yet untitled project, but her character will be named Ann Logan, a nurse whose boyfriend has a strange injury. Also attached to the Greg Daniels produced project are SNL alum Amy Poehler (Baby Mama) and comedian Aziz Ansari (Human Giant). Filming is set to begin in early '09 with a debut planned for the spring or the following fall. At least early rumors like "we'd be losing Dwight" turned out to be unfounded.

Is 'Pushing Daisies' Facing Premature Death?
Category: Television News
By Mark Runyon | November 19, 2008 | 02:26 AM
ABC's Pushing Daisies recently closed out filming its 13th episode. That is a rather unspectacular event unless you consider that industry sources say more episodes are not planned to be ordered. Both ABC spokesman and series creator Bryan Fuller say the word from on high hasn't been passed down yet. Daises has clocked an average 6.6 million households, lining it up at 67th among prime time programming. Fuller has said in the past that if the series isn't allowed to finish this seasons story lines that he would do so in comic book format.

Entourage: Vince Gets Fired
Category: Show Review
By Mark Runyon | November 17, 2008 | 06:06 PM
 | | Grade: C- | Genre: Drama Summary: So another episode ends with less hope than when it began. The taste of mediocrity is nasty and disappointing. It stays with you for weeks on end while the writers keep serving this dish up like its filet mignon.
Can someone please tell me what is going on with Entourage? This season has been so friggin' weak. Every week, we have to deal with this bizarro world where Vince is scraping the bottom of the barrel as E and Drama have dropped a supercharged engine into their careers. All is not right in Hollywood and instead of the series writers working out this cleaver kink in Vince's career, this malaise continues week after week with no end in sight. This hugely compelling insider's look at the Hollywood process has become a massive yawn fest whether we are wasting time searching for Vince's soul out in the desert or dealing with Ari's crisis of conscious as he debates whether or not to take the studio head position. This show is about Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) with a 2000 watt spotlight blazing at him. Right now, this is no better than every other forgettable drama on television. |
American Idol: New York Auditions
Category: Show Review
By Mark Runyon | January 26, 2007 | 11:12 AM
 | | Grade: B | Genre: Reality Summary: New York proved a solid audition stop on the tour thus far. There were plenty of outrageous characters and a few gems that could make a serious run for the crown.
Season 6 of American Idol is off to a rousing start. After slogging through the waste of four cities, we have truly seen some of the worst excuses of talent that America has to offer. You'd think a friend, family member, or concerned pet would pull these poor souls aside and gingerly tell them that they have no talent. Its only right to put these suckers out of their misery in the privacy of their own lives rather than allow them to put their warbled voice on display as the world cringes. We tune in week after week to watch this collective train wreck unfold that leaves a litter of American Idol wannabes in its wake. So far, we have encountered a girl who was under the impression that she was the cowardly lion of Oz. We've seen the most hilarious rendition of the "Don't Cha" ever caught on film. We've even seen Simon scrap any form of political correctness, calling a guy a bug-eyed jungle creature. What other avenues of fun can we expect as the traveling circus settles on the Big Apple? Wednesday night's episode showed that the land of Broadway and crazy cabbies isn't immune to painful Idol auditions. |
